Description: Album of photographs of early Wellington, circa 1880s to 1890s. One view shows the wreck of the Oliver Lang at Kaiwharawhara. Other views of ships show the RMS Ruapehu on arrival in Wellington; the ship Pleione in port, and the Opawa on the patent slip at Evans Bay. Other views in the album include one of the tram track on the way to Oriental Bay; Te Aro (1883); Wellington from Bolton Street; Government House and Offices; a view from "Gaol Hill" (near the Te Aro Prison at the junction of The Terrace and Abel Smith Street); a tram run by the Wellington Tramway Company in front of Government Buildings; the corner of Featherston Street and Lambton Quay with the Union Bank of Australia and Johnny Martin's fountain; the tombstone of Mete Kingi Paetahi at Whanganui; the memorial to Te Wharepouri at Ngauranga; the Karori Reservoir; and a view of the mouth of the Hutt River from the eastern hills. Description: Album of photographs mostly of towns and buildings in Canterbury and Otago, chiefly taken by the Burton Brothers, circa 1880s. They all show city scenes including street views, and images of important buildings. The buildings include church buildings, bank buildings, insurance company office buildings, and hotels (both exterior and interior views of the Grand Hotel, Dunedin). In the North Island, there is a view of the Auckland Synagogue, and a view of Taratahi Homestead, the home of Lady Tancred and Sir Thomas Tancred, in the Carterton District. Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'. Description: Album of photographs of early Wellington, circa 1880s to 1900s. One view shows the wreck of the "Oliver Lang" at Kaiwharawhara. Other views of the harbour show sailing ships, the SS Doric at Queens Wharf, the arrival of the RMS Aorangi, the small ship Manawatu in port, and the Cobar ferry. Away from the inner city and harbour there are three views of native bush with a stream running through, and one of the house under construction. The album is not full, with photographs only found on pages 8-15, and 19-21. The view of the Union Bank of Australia on the corner of Featherston Street and Lambton Quay shows Johnny Martin's fountain in the foreground. There are several views of inner Wellington, some from Bolton Street, with others showing Government House and Offices. The Chief Post Office is seen behind the wharf where the ship Manawatu is moored (p 14) This is the first of two albums which may have been given to the Misses Yamerton as birthday gifts at the same time, both having the same birthday greeting card, and both having a similar collection of photographs, though not all are the same. Description: View from Governor's Bay looking back towards Lyttelton, with various features marked, including Mount Pleasant, H. M. S. Fly in the harbour, the Custom house, Major Hornby's Hotel [Major Hornbrook's hotel, the Mitre Inn] , the Emigration Barracks, a public cook house, the store and the temporary office of the Union Bank, John Robert Godley's house and garden, the Land Office, the Police Office and the Town Hall, Market Place, Jail and Hospital, the [Canterbury] Association Store House, the Esplanade, settlers' huts, the church, parsonage and school house. Several people including an artist are seated on rocks to the left, by an arched rock. The others are a woman with a baby and another woman with two small children. The reversing of the artist's initials and the naivety of the drawing may indicate that this is a contemporary copy by another hand of the original Cridland sketch located at C-014-002-1. It does, however, have more features indicated in writing than the C-014-002-1 version. Other Titles - Lyttelton. The boat labelled 'FLY' is not an accurate depiction of the HMS Fly. See A-292-070 or C-033-003 for more accurate depictions. Description: View looking down Princes Street towards Emily Place, with St Paul's church at the foot of the street, the harbour beyond. The long low house to the right of the church would have been that of Brigade-Major Joseph Greenwood. To the extreme left, the original Wood's Royal Hotel can be seen, with its verandah partly enclosed with lattice. The two-storey building next door to it is the Royal Masonic Hotel, and beside that, the Union Bank of Australia. Various men, women and children are standing or sitting in the street, and a carriage drawn by two horses, carrying four people, rides up the street According to Una Platts' 'The lively capital: Auckland 1840-1865', the image is given the title 'Princes Street, Auckland, 1849, with Colonel Wynyard's carriage'; this title does not appear on the original and may come from family knowledge Wynyard made two versions of the scene; the other is privately owned.
