Date: 1930 - 1939
By: Laugesen, Carl Thorwald, 1900-1987; Coulls, Somerville, Wilkie Ltd
Reference: Eph-E-TOURISM-1930s-08
Description: Shows a Maori woman in traditional feather cloak with patterned lower hem, and wearing a tiki. She is seated on the ground in front of a composite scene of a snowy mountain (probably Mount Taranaki), The Chateau Tongariro, a geyser, and Maori women cooking food in a hot pool. The text below the picture refers the reader to sources of more information: The New Zealand High Commissioner in London, the New Zealand Trade and Tourist Commissioners in Toronto and in Sydney, the New Zealand Government Agent in Melbourne, and the General Manager of the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in Wellington. The printer, C.S.W. is Coulls Somerville Wilkie. Mounted on linen prior to arrival in Library. A slightly enlarged version of this image was used on the front of: "New Zealand : scenic playground of the Pacific". Dept. of Tourist & Publicity, 1937. The subtitle "Wonderland of the Pacific" was used on a booklet issued for use overseas in 1929, and scheduled for re-issue around 1935 in a deluxe addition, according to the Tourist and Publicity Department's annual report for 1934-35. This suggests the poster is dated around that time. The Department reported in 1932 that it had sent around 6000 copies of various posters to its overseas agencies, and was preparing designs for additional posters. Other Titles - Coulls Somerville Wilkie Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Chromolithograph, 1005 x 640 mm.
