Description: Album of photographs from around the world, including Panama, Mozambique, South Africa, St Helena. Images of New Zealand include the homesteads of T B Acland at Mount Peel, and Dr Alfred Barker of Christchurch; views of Wellington, and Orari Gorge. There are a large number of portraits of the carte de visite style, some named. At the back of the album is a series of newspaper cuttings, mostly dealing with shipping disasters in the 1870s. The album was in the possession of Miss Barker of Shooters Hill, London in 1958, the granddaughter of Dr Alfred Barker of Christchurch, New Zealand. Description: Slip inside front cover reads "This album was given by Sir Julius von Haast to Lady von Haast on 21st November 1868. The scenes in it are of Mt. Cook; the Otira; J.D. Enys at his station, Castle Hill; Sir Julius & Lady von Haast & H.F. von Haast in their garden at Gluckauf, Avonside, Christchurch; Rakuia [i.e. Rakaia]; Sumner with Haast in front of Cave Rock; Hokitika; Christchurch scenes". Two photographs on page 45 have hand-written captions by Julius von Haast's son H.F. von Haast. One is of St. Mary's Church (Heathcote), and the other shows the von Haast family at their home at 62 River Road, Avonside, 1868. This inscription reads "Mr. B.W. Patterson, the Oamaru Woosted & Woollen Mills Ltd. sent me this photograph, labelled "Dr. von Haast & family, 62 River Road, Avonside, 1868, & wrote that it was 'a photo taken by my grandfather of your father's old house in Chch.' Description: Looking west along Armagh Street in Christchurch, May 1860. Riccarton bush is in the left background. The long building with three dormers, under the left end of the bush is the Plough Inn. Taken by Alfred Charles Barker. Cranmer Square and Hagly Park are in the background, but not visible. The keeper of the Plough Inn was J Dilloway, who was also a gunsmith. The last house on the right, going towards the river, is near the corner of Armagh Terrace and Park Terrace, and was at some time occupied by Sir Henry Wigram (1857-1934). Note on back of file print reads: "Second house from right in background is Thacker's `Guardian' Printery where the first sessions of the Prov Govt were held - 1853-4." Description: Standing portrait, of James Edward Fitzgerld leaning against a tree. He wears a suit and a beret and holds a tobacco pipe. Photograph taken in Christchurch on 4 December 1868, by Dr Albert Charles Barker. Making New Zealand caption reads: "James Edward Fitzgerald, who was associated with the colonisation of Canterbury. As editor of the 'Lyttelton Times' and later of 'The Press', and superintendent of Canterbury, Fitzgerald did important work for the young province. His later career was marked by diverse activities. In this photograph Fitzgerald is wearing a fashionable smoking cap and jacket. His well cut suit of a light material, lapelled waistcoat, and elastic-sided boots show the characteristic dress of a gentleman of the period."
