Description: Published by McLeod & Slade, Printers, New Plymouth, 1936, as a souvenir of the Maui Pomare Meeting at Manukorihi Pa, Waitara, 27 June, 1936. Also a clipping of an obituary written by James Cowan, about 'Tahu Potiki', Rev Robert Haddon, and a letter to Cowan from Oriwa Haddon, dated 8 Feb 1937. The letter contains an extensive mihi, and acknowledges Cowan's poroporoaki, or farewell to his father. The front of cover of the book has Eileen Cowan's name written on it, in James Cowan's handwriting. Language - Beginning of letter (mihi) is in Maori. Also Maori content in the published book. Description: Photograph album of images taken on the Chatham Islands circa 1898 to 1902 and compiled in circa 1907. At least three of the images were taken by Constance Foster (see CF on these images). Other images may have been taken by Alexander Foster and are inscribed with information regarding the print. - Images show scenes on the islands including unidentified people, landscapes (mainly coast and bush scenes), buildings, plants, and animals and all are inscribed with information regarding what is seen in the print. - Contains images of: unidentified family group at Ohinemama homestead with creeper covering building; the homestead Wharekauri and scenes from the farm including paddocks, long nosed gate, stone wall, a shed constructed of punga logs, a bush camp, and a family portrait with flax and bush in the background); the wharf at Waitangi with eroded hills in the background; the public school at Te One as well as nearby houses in the town, lagoon, paddocks, and two boys resting alongside a track through the bush; the interior and exterior of St Augustine's Church; Waitangi Pa; Mairangi Pa; and a house and [marae?] at Wairua - Images of natural environment include rock formations and coast at Hukarangi, the boat harbour at Pitt Island, River Nairn, bush track at Otamatea, Maungatukuriwa with unidentified people on the riverbank, basaltic columns at Ohira and Ouenga, Otemapu falls and pool, and Matakatau Falls. Album also contains an image of Chatham Island Lilies, children maypole dancing, and W Dix's bullock team. The latter image includes young boys hanging around, a dog, a river, bush, [and Mr Dix?]). Description: Portrait of Wiremu Parata Te Kakakura Waipunaahau seated out side a raupo whare. Possibly taken at a hui on 12 September 1891, when Ngāti Huia gathered to receive the infant son of Governor Onslow, who had been named Huia out of respect for Māori. This photograph was previously identified as being at Karaka Bay, Wellington This photo was probably taken at the same time other photos in this collection were also taken at Karaka Bay with Heeni Te Rei (a close relative of Parata's) and Kereopa Tukumaru. Heeni is wearing black and this may indicate that the occassion is a tangihanga (a funeral). Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).

Description: Digital copy of coloured manuscript map showing land between the Mimi River and the settlement of Pukearuhe. Shows numbered land blocks labelled with names of Captain Messenger and the Taranaki Military Settlers. Also shown is the township near Pukearuhe called 'Clifton', streams, rivers and swamps. Also shows Maori reserves at the mouth of the Mimi River and at Waiti Beach. Unnamed pa sites are indicated. Scale is given as 30 chains to an inch. Annotations describe the land and suitability for farming and planting. Notabilia lists size and distances to the Redoubt at Pukearuhe from various places. Note on the reverse of the map reads 'A present to me by the settlers when visiting White Cliffs or Clifton in company with Mr Whitely [sic] the Wesleyan Missionary of New Plymouth in the year 1866. Poor Whitely the following year or somewhat later [was] ambushed and killed by the Maoris while on a similar visit, according to his usual custom'. The note is signed 'Edward W. Bawtree, Surgeon in the Army'. Original map: Ink and colour wash on dressed linen, coloured, scale [ca.1:23,760], 26 x 52cm. Annotation on lower right hand side of map reads 'Compiled from recent surveys by George Hatley [sic] Esqire and the topographical features of the country surveyed and filled in by W. H. Burgoyne. Clifton, 15th Febuary 1866'. Rev John Whiteley was killed when he was on his way to visit military settlers at White Cliff in 1869. Extended Title - Being the town and rural lands allotted to the Officers, Non Comm[an]d Officers and forty six of the men of No. 6 Capt[ain] W. B. Messenger's Company of Taranaki Military Settlers. Inscriptions: Verso - top right - 'A present to me by the settlers when visiting White Cliffs or Clifton in company with Mr Whitely [sic] the Wesleyan Missionary of New Plymouth in the year 1866. Poor Whitely the following year or somewhat later [was] ambushed and killed by the Maoris while on a similar visit, according to his work custom.' The note is signed 'Edward W. Description: Contains photograph album, loose prints, and negatives of images taken on the Chatham Islands between circa 1900 to 1930s, with most images taken in circa 1920s. Local photographer and farmer Owen Cecil Mitchell created the negatives, most likely compiled the album, and stamped the backs of many of the prints, in ink, with his name. A few prints are identified on the backs and some have corresponding negatives. Numerous negatives do not have corresponding prints and some later images may show scenes in Christchurch. - Photographs chiefly illustrate life on the Chatham Islands, including portraits of individuals and groups and community events and industry (mainly sheep farming). Landscapes, wildlife, flora, and buildings are also covered. - The collection contains images of men holding human bones, mainly in a beach setting.
