Description: Depicts the ceremony of choosing the first National flag of New Zealand by the Maori chiefs from one of three designs, witnessed by a grathering of missionaries, settlers, commanders of 10 British and 3 American ships. The ceremony took place at the house of the British Resident, Mr James Busby at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on the 20th March 1834 with a salute of 21 guns from HMS Alligator (in distance). The flag that was chosen is being pointed at by a chief holding up a greenstone mere. The design chosen was the red cross of St George on a white background and a small red St George's cross in the top left hand corner on a blue background. In each of these quarters is an 8 pointed star. An enlargement of the flag is in the bottom lefthand corner of the postcard. The flag was called the Flag of United Tribes of New Zealand (1834-1840) The flag was adopted by Shaw Savill & Company as its house flag in 1858 it having ceased to be the national flag when New Zealand came under the British sovereignty Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Shows six frames. Under the title, text reads 'I think, what this lady really has in mind is a 'Helicopter hall'. The first frame shows the Christchurch town hall with a helicopter rotor on its roof. The cartoonist suggests it could also serve as a temporary railway station. The second frame suggests the 'Helicopter hall' could serve as a new Supreme Court. The next frame shows the hall acting as a 'stand-in stand' at Lancaster Park, while one of the stands is being rebuilt. The fourth frame pictures the cartoonist looking up at the 'Helicopter hall' and text reads 'We could use it as a combination bus shelter and telephone box at our corner.' In the fifth frame, the hall serves as a roof for the Centennial Pool, and in the final frame, it serves as a breakwater wall, bathing shed and Saturday trading post in Sumner Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. The last scenes are coloured photographs showing some of the decorations erected for the Royal visit of Queen Elizabeth II, in January 1954. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
