Description: A portrait of the seated figure of Tohitapu, with long hair and beard. Inscribed on verso: 'Tohitapu from sketch by Rev. H. Williams. Carved and coloured wooden frame is from church at Te Wairoa which was buried by the eruption of Tarawera in 1886'. Tohitapu feasted on the body of Marion du Fresne. Description: The body of a chief, lying on a bier, with a whare, a pataka and the palisades of a pa in the background. Seven Maori are seated outside the whare. A small dog sniffs around a cooking pot on the left. A crossed rifle, a taiaha and another weapon are at the head of the bier. Description: The artist and his friend, Mr Shand, seated in a rocky inlet, surrounded by bush, in coversation with Hongi Hika and a group of family and other attendants. Two canoes are drawn up on the beach to the left and other Maori are visible in the distance. A carved figure leans from a rock behind and above Hongi. There are rifles and cartridge cases on the ground and one man is holding a taiaha. The scene is on a beach close to Russell (Kororareka) and took place in November 1827.
