Description: Wallet of twelve concertina-folded photographs of Rotorua showing the Bath House, the Municipal Buildings, Fairy Springs, Pohutu Geyser, Boiling mud, Guide Rangi, Maori babies, entrance to Whaka[rewarewa], Ohinemutu from Hospital Hill, Poi dancers, "Tama-te-Kapua" carved house, and the entrance to the Government Grounds. Dated 1940s, as the Municipal buildings were newly built in 1940 when the Rotorua Library moved in there. No corroborating documentation in Wises directories 1930-1950s. Description: Album of photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1940 and 1954. The sequence of images is not chronological. Slip attached to spine reads: Trips - Bold Peak, 1943, Mt. Arthur tbld, Marlb. Sounds, Mt. Algidus, 1946, Honeymoon, 1948. 7th Pacific Sc. Congress. West Coast. The album opens with views taken on a trip to the West Coast in January 1954; followed by a West Coast museum trip, February 1940; a Neslson-Westhaven expedition, November 1952; John and Pam Salmon's honeymoon in the South Island in December 1948; and a trip to Mt. Algidus, February 1946. The next trips in the album were the Mt. Arthur tableland museum expedition, February 1946, and again in February 1948; the Bold Peak district, February 1943; trip around the Sounds on "The Alert", August 1948; air trip over the Sounds in April 1949; and then the South Pacific Science Congress, Auckland-Christchurch, February 1949. Description: A programme for a Maori concert performance featuring powhiri, love ditties, poi dances, action songs, haka, Maori games, poetry (patere), waiata, combination poi, toutou (war dance). There is a photographic portrait of Guide Rangi in the centre of the programme side. Soloists and named performers are: Wiremu Keepa, Ani Patiti, Kere Ratema, Hep Waretini. The non-programme side advertises Larsen's bus tours of the North Island, with an illustration of a bus and of a hostess with a microphone. There is also an illustration of a carved wooden figure, a woman performing with poi, and a cloaked man performing with a taiaha. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s) on folded pamphlet.. Physical Description: Photolithographs on both sides of sheet 202 x 340 mm, folded to 135 x 85 mm. Provenance: Donated by Mr Barry Chalmers, Wellington, in 2005. Previously owned by Mr Chalmers' aunt, Mrs Dora Grace Grubb (1909-1992).

Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows aspects of the thermal areas at Whakarewarewa and Waimangu, and scenes of Maori life. These include a group using a hot pool for cooking, a group of poi dancers, women weaving flax, a Maori carver at work with a group of tourists watching, a Maori warrior at the gate of a pa, and a group of women and children wearing a variety of Maori cloaks. The next set are from the Tarawera area, and include views of the Frying Pan Lake, Gibraltar Rock; three images copied from publications, one showing the White Terraces, and two showing the effects of the Tarawera eruption in 1886; a launch for hire on Lake Tarawera; and the entrance to the buried village at Te Wairoa. The last two views show the beach near Gisborne looking south, and looking down over Gisborne township from a hill. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
