Collection consists mainly of portraits of sailing ships and steam ships visiting Port Chalmers, but also includes views of Port Chalmers and environs. Physical Description: 1/1 and 1/2 plate glass negatives Provenance: The collection was divided on the death of De Maus; the shipping photos being taken to England by his daughter, Mrs D Grayston, another group being held in Outram by another daughter, Mrs O J Armour, and a third group being left in the studio, which had passed in 1932 to Miss Catherine Euphemia Matheson. She worked as a photographer from that address. Processing information: Archivists notes - Originally arranged and described in 1993. Reference number changed from PAColl-3035 to PA-Group-00198 in 2008.

Description: The Peter Denny in Otago Harbour, taken by David Alexander De Maus, between 1865-1874 Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom centre - "Peter Denny" The Peter Denny was built for the Albion Company in 1865 by Duthie of Aberdeen Scotland, for use as a vessel for immigration. During the first five voyages from 1865-1872, she brought out a total of 376 passengers. The Peter Denny was a ship of near 1000 tons and was a fast ship. She made seven trips to Port Chalmers betweem 1865-1874. (Information from 'White wings: fifty years of sail in the New Zealand trade 1850-1900, Volume I by Henry Brett, 1924). There are standard tourist features like the Pink and White Terraces, and geysers. There is also one group of photographs of Maori. Some notable buildings are also depicted.
