Description: Published by McLeod & Slade, Printers, New Plymouth, 1936, as a souvenir of the Maui Pomare Meeting at Manukorihi Pa, Waitara, 27 June, 1936. Also a clipping of an obituary written by James Cowan, about 'Tahu Potiki', Rev Robert Haddon, and a letter to Cowan from Oriwa Haddon, dated 8 Feb 1937. The letter contains an extensive mihi, and acknowledges Cowan's poroporoaki, or farewell to his father. The front of cover of the book has Eileen Cowan's name written on it, in James Cowan's handwriting. Language - Beginning of letter (mihi) is in Maori. Also Maori content in the published book. Description: Photograph album of images taken on the Chatham Islands circa 1898 to 1902 and compiled in circa 1907. At least three of the images were taken by Constance Foster (see CF on these images). Other images may have been taken by Alexander Foster and are inscribed with information regarding the print. - Images show scenes on the islands including unidentified people, landscapes (mainly coast and bush scenes), buildings, plants, and animals and all are inscribed with information regarding what is seen in the print. - Contains images of: unidentified family group at Ohinemama homestead with creeper covering building; the homestead Wharekauri and scenes from the farm including paddocks, long nosed gate, stone wall, a shed constructed of punga logs, a bush camp, and a family portrait with flax and bush in the background); the wharf at Waitangi with eroded hills in the background; the public school at Te One as well as nearby houses in the town, lagoon, paddocks, and two boys resting alongside a track through the bush; the interior and exterior of St Augustine's Church; Waitangi Pa; Mairangi Pa; and a house and [marae?] at Wairua - Images of natural environment include rock formations and coast at Hukarangi, the boat harbour at Pitt Island, River Nairn, bush track at Otamatea, Maungatukuriwa with unidentified people on the riverbank, basaltic columns at Ohira and Ouenga, Otemapu falls and pool, and Matakatau Falls. Album also contains an image of Chatham Island Lilies, children maypole dancing, and W Dix's bullock team. The latter image includes young boys hanging around, a dog, a river, bush, [and Mr Dix?]). Description: Contains photograph album, loose prints, and negatives of images taken on the Chatham Islands between circa 1900 to 1930s, with most images taken in circa 1920s. Local photographer and farmer Owen Cecil Mitchell created the negatives, most likely compiled the album, and stamped the backs of many of the prints, in ink, with his name. A few prints are identified on the backs and some have corresponding negatives. Numerous negatives do not have corresponding prints and some later images may show scenes in Christchurch. - Photographs chiefly illustrate life on the Chatham Islands, including portraits of individuals and groups and community events and industry (mainly sheep farming). Landscapes, wildlife, flora, and buildings are also covered. - The collection contains images of men holding human bones, mainly in a beach setting.
