Description: Head and shoulders profile portrait of an unidentified Maori youth, attending Charles Reay's school for Maori students, which opened in Nelson in April 1843 The young man may possibly be Tamati Tikao (also known as Tamati Pukurau) of Ngai Tahu, who studied with Reay, then returned to the Banks Peninsula area by 1849. However, his description as being 'of the Motuka tribe' does not fit with other known information about Tamati Tikao. See: Minson, Marian. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Paramata, Plimmerton and Pukerua districts with Mana Island. Location of several pa sites indicated: Wairaka Pa near Pukerua Bay; Taupo Pa (built 1844) at Plimmerton, Warakoua Pa on Porirua Harbour's North shore, and a pa at Titahi Bay. Also shows location of Jackson's Hotel, Thom's hotel and whaling station, Maori gardens beyond Taupo pa and Maori path to Pukerua Bay. Subdivisions of land are indicated around Porirua Harbour. Attributed to Charles Heaphy until 1993, because sketches referred to in title were thought to be Heaphy's. Reattribution to Brees because 1. Brees was Principal surveyor for the N.Z.Company and the map shows land subdivisions. 2. Handwriting very similar to Brees' on MS map held by the Admiralty (photo held by Cartographic Collection (823 at / 1844-5 / acc 855) 3. Indications of points of view of sketches can mostly be linked with known originals by Brees. The following list gives the numbers on this map followed by titles and plate numbers of the matching illustration from Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847). Description: Two images on one page. The upper image shows a group of Maori children on a swing or moari, a tall pole with ropes attached from its top, flying out over a bank, watched by a group of seated adults and children. The palisades of a pa are in the right background and a low hill in the distance. The lower view shows a haka, with naked men in the act of raising oars, watched by other Maori. Canoes are drawn up at the edge of Lake Rotorua and the palisades of Ohinemutu Pa and its higher buildings can be seen behind the men. Both drawings are copied from the work of Joseph Jenner Merrett, without acknowledgement. See the Library's Hobson Album for Merrett's drawing 'A native game' showing the swing. (E-216-017). This was drawn before 1843. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. Similarly, in the Hobson Album, also by Merrett is 'The pah of Oinamutu on the Rotorua Lake', which provides the background Angas has used for War Dance. Description: A seated Maori couple with a background of a carved whare. The man, To Ngaporutu has a moko and is wearing a greenstone earring and a flax leaf rain cloak. His wife, seated on his right, is in a woven flax korowai cloak and has an albatross feather ear adornment. She has a chin moko and crosses marked on her cheek and forehead. The pair were residents of the Waitomo area, with Rihe coming from the Wanganui area. Both were recent converts to Christianity. On the right side, another seated man and woman, of Waikato, ther man "Ngawhea" from the Kawhia area had not been converted to Christianity; the woman, Nga Miho was a 'celebrated priestess, and wife of Rangitautaea, the old chief of Ahuahu, who was wounded at Taranaki'. The woman is wearing a blanket, the man a flax rain cloak. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. According to Angas's text, Nga Miho means 'the teeth'. However the usual Maori word for teeth is niho. Description: Looking down from a hill covered in scrub, with the beachline beyond the town visible to the right and Okiato peninsula opposite across the bay, with many other hills in the distance. The settlement of Okiato can be made out in the distance with Captain Hobson's house on the hilltop, and James Reddy Clendon's trading post (a two-storied building) at the beach Two places in the Bay of Islands were named Russell in the 1840s.
