Description: Watercolour by an unidentified hand, possibly after Augustus Earle's lithograph Kororadika Beach [1827 or 1828], published 1838. View from the top of a steep path looking down towards the beach. There is a ship in the bay, as well as other vessels in the water and on the beach, which could be waka. The view is framed on both sides by trees; on the left are three trees that look like palms, but that are probably cabbage trees. Two Maori figures stand in the foreground. These are probably women, as they both have what appear to be babies on their backs. Earle's handcoloured lithograph was originally published in Sketches illustrative of the native inhabitants and islands of New Zealand (London: Robert Martin and Co., 1838) Inscriptions: Verso - top centre - New Zealand Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: The artist and his friend, Mr Shand, seated in a rocky inlet, surrounded by bush, in coversation with Hongi Hika and a group of family and other attendants. Two canoes are drawn up on the beach to the left and other Maori are visible in the distance. A carved figure leans from a rock behind and above Hongi. There are rifles and cartridge cases on the ground and one man is holding a taiaha. The scene is on a beach close to Russell (Kororareka) and took place in November 1827. Description: A Maori chief standing in a beached canoe, addressing a crowd of warriors, mostly seated, with a few standing. Two other long canoes are on the beach, one with a sail is in the water, and others are pulled up close to a pa or kainga in the left background. A dog sniffs the ground in the foreground. Most men are armed with guns, although one on the far right holds a taiaha. A gourd and flax kit are centrally placed amongst one group of men. Earle's text reads: "A party of warriors had collected at the Bay of Islands for the purpose of making a hostile visit to a tribe on the banks of the Thames. They were detained by contrary winds; and for several days were constantly engaged in listening to speeches from their chiefs, who addressed them from a canoe hauled on shore ... one [canoe], which I measured, was 70 feet long, and carried one hundred fighting men." Description: Te Puni standing, with full facial moko, clad in a dogskin cloak and holding a taiaha in his right hand. Behind him is Wellington Harbour with two Maori by the shore to the left, and Petone Pa, a canoe and a flagpole with the New Zealand Company flag on the right. The western Hutt hills are in the background. Accompanying text reads: These two chiefs sold the site of the present Wellington Settlement to Colonel Wakefield, the Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company, in September 1839... Epuni is the uncle of Warepori. Under the same unfavourable circumstances as his nephew, he has nobly deserved the name of "a true gentleman." He still lives at the village of Pitone, loved and respected by the English inhabitants of all ranks. These portraits were drawn at the time of the purchase in 1839... the village of Pitone and the flag-staff at the foot of which Colonel Wakefield took formal possession, appear in the back-ground. Description: A European man, probably Earle himself, being led down a steep path by a Maori with a mere on his wrist and a taiaha over his shoulder and gesturing towards the beachside settlement of Kororareka (Russell) in the background. A second Maori man is behind Earle, carrying his baggage with a gourd balanced atop the load. There is a ship in the bay, two canoes being rowed into shore, other canoes pulled up on the beach, and European houses on the flat land at the water's edge. Several whare, a storage platform and felled tree trunks to the right on the hill. A cabbage tree and another tall tree frame the view on the left. Other Titles - Kororareka. Russell. Description: A group of war canoes racing, some with sails. In the centre of the group is the missionary schooner, Karere, flying a White Ensign. A headland is in the background. The war raid dated from the intertribal musket wars carried out by Ngapuhi in the 1820s and 1830s, and the expedition was on its way to Tauranga in 1833. Reprinted in the Quarterly papers of the Church Missionary Society in 1849. The image was also used to illustrate Rev. William Yate's 'An account of New Zealand' (London, 1835) opp. p. 184, with title The mission boat accompanying a New Zealand war expedition. Engraved by S. Williams. Engraved from a drawing by Henry Williams titled Expedition on its way to Tauranga in 1833.
