Shows groups of figures on foreshore including man on horseback, man examining ships through spyglass, two small groups of Maori watching, two men smoking long pipes, 14 sailing ships including one rounding Point Halswell, Somes Island with flag flying at its southern end, two Maori craft including one with sails. View extends from Warepori's Village in Pitone at left, to Mount Victoria at right. Description: Shows dwelling with what appears to be battened-down thatch roofing. There is a stream on the left, and the house stands in a cleared area of bush. The station was established by Clifford and Weld. First sheep station in New Zealand, established in Wairarapa by Mr C Clifford in 1843. Compare an almost identical copy (but on brown paper) in Mein Smith's hand from the collection of William Swainson, located at A-024-019. Description: Shows rotting shell of a large tree trunk, with a tree stump to the left and dense bush behind, including a tree-fern. Probably painted on or near the artist's farm at Huangarua, between Greytown and Martinborough in the Wairarapa, although it could also be a Wellington or Hutt Valley scene. The land is flat and there are no identifying hills visible. Attribution based on style. Attributed to W.Mein Smith by previous owners as well. Other Titles - Bush scene Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: A small lake, better known as Kaitoke Lake, between low hills, with flax in the foreground and one or two trees around its perimeter. The area is south of Wanganui and close to the coast. The name St Mary's Lake is no longer widely known. The lake is one of the small lakes south of Wanganui and close to the coast, to the left of Highway 3. It is better known as Lake Kaitoke Other Titles - Kaitoke Lake Inscriptions: Recto - Title, date, signature in ink, lower right in the artist's hand; also in ink, lower right, in the artist's hand: "No. 5.". The New Zealand Company has added "Portfolio D" in ink, lower left, No. 47 in ink upper left and its stamp, dated Mar 22 1842, upper centre in the middle of the sky area. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: A general and close-up view of the new settlement of Petre or Wanganui (also known as Whanganui) just after its establishment. The thatched roofing of a house is being completed by two men in the foreground and men are hauling timber for other buildings along the foreshore and from a small boat at the river's edge. Fences divide off other houses and the nearest house on the far left, middle distance is identified as Dr Peter Wilson's house, the building being thatched is the Police Office and Police Magistrate's house, a larger one is Mr E. J. Wakefield's house (ware Wikitoria), and two other are Mr Henry Churton's houses. The large cliff across the river is Shakespeare's Cliff. The accompanying text reads: This is four miles from the mouth of the river, on the north shore of Cook's Strait, 110 miles from Wellington. Description: View looking north along the lower west coast of the North Island. Names Mts Egmont and Tongariro (this is more correctly Ruapehu), which are shown in the distance. On the face of the painting, at the top, is "No. 36" (added at a later date), with the N Z Company stamp which is dated "Mar 23 1842", the date of the watercolour's arrival in London and registration by the New Zealand Company. Description: View from Tinakori Hill, looking down over Thorndon, showing the Immigration Barracks, the first St Paul's Church and a single house on the shore at Oriental Bay. The view looks across the harbour towards Mount Victoria and Evans Bay. There are several dead trees on Thorndon Flat. Point Jerningham is on the left across the water, and there are six ships and several smaller vessels in the harbour. Two flags are flying close to the shore The Hocken Library holds a lithograph (possibly a unique surviving copy) of this view, published by Jones & Bluett, Wellington, 1841. The view is taken at much the same time as Heaphy's 'Thorndon Flat, April 1841' (C-025-010) Features marked along the top, but trimmed, so that they are all incomplete: 'n Houses' is probably Immigration Houses'; 'a Esq.r' is probably Duppa Esquire [house in Oriental Bay]; 'Church' is probably St Paul's Church; 'ia' is the end of Mt Victoria; 'Bay' on the left, is Evans Bay. Dating: the associated lithograph was published in 1843. St Paul's Church, Museum Street, was consecrated in 1844, but possibly completed some time before 1844. Description: The Ruamahanga River to the left, and Clifford and Weld's sheep station homestead in front of bush in the centre and right. The roof appears to be made of battened-down thatch, and the plants in front may be rows of vegetables. A slab chimney is on the left end of the single-storey house. Prior to January 2000, catalogued as Cottage by William Swainson; however comparison with an almost identical signed and titled pencil drawing at A-035-001 shows it to be of Wharekaka and by William Mein Smith.
