Description: Shows a view of the town of Wanganui from across the river. In the left foreground are cattle grazing, and there are two figures on horseback on the hill in the centre foreground. Description: The mouth of either the Manawatu or Rangitikei Rivers with canoes crossing, horses swimming across and a large square cart on a canoe, its wheels over the sides and hanging in the water, so that it resembles a small paddle-steamer. There are people observing from both banks. The artist continues his commentary with 'The natives cried out 'Ittie ittie teiner' (Little steamer). Twice J. P. travelled up the coast and had to encounter the nuisance and danger of the rivers, some very broad and rapid - To go to Wanganui [from Wellington] there are six considerable tidal rivers ...'
