[Oliver, Richard Aldworth] 1811-1889 :Upper Hutt River in the early 1850s.

Date: 1848 - 1851

By: Clarke, Cuthbert Charles, 1818-1863; Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889

Reference: B-030-001

Description: Shows Maori launching a canoe; a horse and cart are on the road to the right, at the base of a cliff Title taken from handwritten slip on back; compare with slip on back of B-030/002. Both slips removed in the course of conservation and no longer present. There is a faint pencil drawing of a bush scene on the verso. The backing of the work has been partially removed and the drawing is hard to see. This work was attributed by the Library to Cuthbert Clarke until 2008. However Clarke is not known to have visited the Wellington region and the style appears closer to that of R. A. Oliver, who was based in Wellington and visited the Hutt Valley on more than one occasion. One watercolour of the Hutt by Oliver is dated March 1848, another September 30th, with no year. Compare the articulation of the figure dragging the canoe at the right, with a figure in the same position, dragging a canoe at Wahapu, Bay of Islands, in Oliver's watercolour at C-001-011 Other Titles - Clarke, Cuthbert Charles, 1819-1863. 1848-1851 Inscriptions: Recto - 'Title taken from handwritten slip on back; compare with slip on back of B-030-002' according to catalogue card. Neither hand-written slip has been retained. The wording of the title suggests a later attribution, not the artist's own title. For location of this view compare with Charles Barraud's "[River valley] 1856" at B-084-005; and with G Swainson's "Road round the second gorge", lithograph in British Library - see file print of this at E-143-067. Several of Swainson's lithographs are after originals by other artists. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 241 x 327 mm

Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889 :Sketch on the Wahapu beach, Bay of Islands. / Draw...

Date: 1849 - 1850

By: Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889

Reference: C-001-011

Description: Shows a waka being drawn up on a beach by a group of about sixteen men, while two Maori stand and one is seated in the right foreground, with a pig and several kete. In the background the hillside slopes to the sea and there is a long whare on the slope, with figures standing in front of it and a camp fire at the left end of it. Compare Oliver's watercolour in private hands: 'Launching a canoe, Bay of Islands', (photograph held in the Library's file print sequence), probably the sketch taken on the spot. 'Sketch on the Wahapu beach' was probably a second copy of 'Launching a canoe'. Details have been slightly simplified, but are otherwise identical. 'Sketch on the Wahapu beach' is probably a second copy in Oliver's own hand. The brushwork appears to be in his style. Dating: this work may date to the artist's visit to the Bay of Islands in April 1849, or to his visit with Governor George Grey to the Bay of Islands in August-September 1849. Other Titles - Captain Inscriptions: Verso - top centre - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on linen-backed paper, 350 x 533 mm.

Oliver, Richard Aldworth 1811-1889 :Rangi-Hira (Flash of Lightning), the wife of the ch...

Date: 1847 - 1851

By: Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889; McClintock, Madeleine, active 1985; Oliver, G C S (Mr), active 1970s

Reference: C-054-020

Description: Shows an elderly man (possibly Rangihaeata) seated in the centre of a group of four women, while one white-bearded man stands behind the group. In the right foreground is a spherical iron cooking pot. In the left background is a tree with forked base, showing a whare behind it. In the centre background is a cabbage tree, and there is a flax plant beside the group of women. In the distance is a hilly coastline, perhaps the Paekakariki coast. The clothing of the group varies. One woman wears a dark layered feather cloak; another wears what appears to be a red blanket. The old woman wears a light-coloured cloak and a dress of patterned fabric. Described in a list of Oliver paintings in the possession of Mr G.C.S. Oliver, as "Rangihera - Rangihaeta's wife. Flash of lightning. Old man, five women in front of hollow tree". The central figure has been interpreted as Te Rangihaeata, himself, shown with his characteristic albatross-feather ear adornments. Moko on his forehead is indicated and he holds a mere in his right hand. As there is no record of a wife of Rangihaeata's with the name Rangi-Hira (or Rangihaera or Rangiuira) it may be that Oliver was mistaken in his identification of the central figure as Rangihaeata's wife. Compare the Library's very similar group portrait, also by Oliver of Rangihaeata and family outside a whare (C-054-014). The latter view has fewer figures but several are clearly the same figures. Certificate of verification, signed by Madeleine McClintock on 17 May 1985, on verso of backing board. The scene is likely to have been painted in 1851, when Oliver was on his way towards Waikane and Otaki for the meeting with Rangihaeata depicted in Oliver's watercolour C-054-018 [A korero. Te Rangihaeata addresssing the Governor in Chief (Sir George Grey) at Waikanae [or Otaki] Sept 1851]. The identity of Rangi-Hira is uncertain. Compare with Isaac Coates' portrait of E Ranguera (a.k.a. Te Rongo), an earlier wife of Rangihaeata. Te Rongo was killed at Wairau in 1843, well before Oliver arrived in New Zealand. Another wife of chiefly status was Te Pikinga. The woman variously described by Oliver as 'Rangihera' and 'Rangihira', may be Rangihaeata's niece, Rangiuira of Kapiti Island, wife from 1847 to 1854 of David Brown, a farmer of Kapiti. Tony Ireland (pers com. November 2007) has made a suggested indentification of the figures in the picture. He cites Waari Carkeek http://www.ngatitoa.iwi.nz/briefs, who cites the cursing song of Rangihaeata's sister Tope-Ora (Nga Moteatea number 280) which states that the second Tope-ora was a daughter of Rangihaeata. Tony Ireland therefore surmises that the picture shows, from left to right: Rangi Topeora I, her fourth husband Arapata Hauturu, Rangiuira's father Te Paea (standing), Rangihaeata (seated with white hair), the infant Tope-Ora II, Rangiuira Rakera Te Paea, and an unnamed woman reclining on the ground at the right. However a personal communication from Bernard Morgan, October 2009, disputes these identifications. Bernard Morgan, a descendant of Rangiuira te Paea, states that Rangiuira was never married to Rangihaeata. She was married to David Brown of Kapiti Island 1847-1854. The suggested identifications are speculatory and may be incorrect. Other Titles - Te Rangiuira - Rangihaeta's wife... in front of hollow tree. Rangiheara. Rangihaeata. Inscriptions: Verso - centre - Rangi heara; Verso - centre - Rangi-hira / Flash of Lightning [both bracketed to] Rangihaeta's wife Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 310 x 480 mm (sight). Provenance: Passed down through the Oliver family to Mr G.C.S. Oliver of Rutland, England. Exhibited at New Zealand House, London for about 20 years, to the early 1980s. Inherited by G.C.S. Oliver's daughter, Mrs Madeleine McClintock of Sheffield, England, and then sold in about 1985, through the dealership of Brian Groshinski, to the Goodman Group.

Date: 1850 - 1851

By: Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889

Reference: C-054-014

Description: The Ngati Toa chief and tohunga Te Rangihaeata seated with his family (?). Behind the group is a thatched raupo whare. A dog lies in front, as well as a gourd, a cauldron and an axe with a carved handle. Inside the whare can be seen an unidentifiable object, possibly a charcoal burner. The sketch is unfinished Rangihaeata is not known to have fathered children, so the three young women with him are likely to be nieces or cousins. The woman leaning against him may be Rangihera, also known as Rangihira and Te Rangiuira, his niece. The source for the date 1850 is not known. The work bears no inscriptions. It may also be 1851, the likely date for C-054-020, the more finished and altered version of this view. Compare C-054-020 R. A. Oliver's 'Rangi-Hira (flash of lightning) the wife of the chief Rangihaeta [1847-1851] a more finished watercolour showing Rangihaeata with two young women and an older one, as well as a standing older man behind the group. The same cauldron and gourd are on the ground in front of the group, a whare is behind them beyond a large hollow tree trunk and the Paekakariki coastline is in the background. Te Rehe is mentioned as one of a group involved in an altercation during a journey between the spit of Lake Ellesmere (Kaitorete) and Taumutu, when he was accompanying a contingent of Kaiapoi chiefs (See "Akaroa and Banks Peninsula" (1940), page 31-32).
