Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Leonard Willaim Jury, great-great-grandson of the original owner; history of the Jury family. This history was compiled by Len Jury, ca 1985 and includes a history of the farm as well as information about the William Bryan, the Battle of Waireka, reminiscences related to the family and local history. Copy of article by NZ Historic Places Trust entitled `Archaeological investigations: Jury and Autridge farmsteads, Omata' (2007) The original owner was Elizabeth (nee Hoskin) wife of Jesse (Justinian) Jury. She purchased 46 acres of the Omata Block from the Plymouth Company in 1847. The Jury family arrived in New Plymouth on the `William Bryan' in 1841. In 2007 Leonard William Jury and his wife Heather owned the property at Omata and were awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. He died in 1873 and the land passed to his widow Margaret (nee Atkinson) who remarried Robert Cotton in 1875. The land was transferred to Robert Cotton in 1891. At the time of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award in 2005 the farm was owned jointly by brothers Roger James and Stuart William Cotton (great-grandsons of Robert Cotton). Original owner was Robert William Andrew Elliott who acquired 568 acres of the Mangatahi Block by ballot in 1907. On his death in 1933 the farm was run as an estate by his wife Ruby. After her death it was farmed in partnership by their children Joyce and Robert. After three years Robert leased his sister's share, until 2003 when he bought her out. The couple were childless and on his death in 1875 the farm passed to Jesse's nephew John McMillan who died before he was 21 and without a will. The property reverted to his father Angus McMillan who made it over to his younger sons Angus John and William. In 2008 the farm was owned by John's son Ian McMillan and wife Lois (nee Wilcox), the farming being undertaken by Ian's cousins Ross McMillan and son Barrie. For the first few years they farmed in partnership but after Duncan and wife Ellen bought a farm at Benmore, Murdoch and George then split the property. George farmed 1550 acres. In later years his sons Colin and Ian joined the farming partnership. In 2000 his son Collin formed Brookdale Dairying with his son Neil and daughter-in-law Neroli.
