The W & G Turnbull & Co building was designed by Thomas Turnbull in 1877. The building seen here has a four storey central structure which was added in 1886. Description: Street scene at Port Chalmers, ca 1868. Looking along southern George Street to John Crickmore's Royal Hotel and brick stables. The stables were built in 1867. There is an ornate light outside, which was a legal requirement for all public houses. Several people are standing on the first floor verandah, and there is a small group at the main door.
