Description: A scene at Russell (Kororareka) looking out into the Bay, with the islands and hills opposite. Four slaves are pounding fern root on rocks beside two fires, watched by their masters; a third fire on the right has a group of four Maori huddled around it. A storehouse (pataka) and other storage mechanisms, including a platform on poles and forked sticks holding bundles containing food, and several other low houses with raupo thatch are surrounded by palisades.
