Description: Taupiri Mountain in the background, with the riverbank to the left and houses in the distance at the foot of the mountain. Copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, now in the Hocken Library in E. A. Williams' Notebook, p. 37. The Turnbull has a slide of this work (under the same title as Hamley's). Description: A standing armed soldier and two seated Maori in the centre foreground, looking towards Te Awamutu township. A fort is enclosed within a fence on the right, and the church on the left is surrounded by other buildings with puffs of smoke, either from fires or shot. Description: View from across the Waikato River towards the main buildings of the Maori king's residence. The long low building on the left is the 'General's quarters', the 'King's palace' is in the centre with dark red barge boards, the 'council chambers' are futher to the right and the closest building and the flagstaff is on the far right. There are two small canoes at the landing place, along with people and horses.
