Description: Looking south along a sandy beach with cliffs in the distance, north of Wanganui. A group of soldiers is swimming in the sea in the distance, with several others standing on the beach. In the foreground, a team of bullocks is hauling a dray with firewood, led by several men up a track towards the military camp, visible on the hilltop on the left. In the foreground is Mowhanau Stream, near Kai Iwi A copy of an original by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams 'Camp. Alexander's Farm. Jany. 20 1865'. Williams' original is in the Hocken Library. The men in the sea are too distant to be obvious in the original Other Titles - Camp. Alexander's Farm. Description: View along the north shoreline of the Whanganui River, with the Rutland Stockade (with two fortresses and other buildings within the perimeter fence]. Military tents dot the slopes of the nearer hills, and the spire of St Peter's Church can be seen, along with the buildings along the shoreline. In the right foreground, a Maori man in a cloak with a taiaha is conversing with a soldier in a blue uniform. This watercolour is copied from one by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams: 'Looking up the Wanganui River from sandhills near the town, 16 January 1865' in the Hocken Library, p. 63 in their now dismantled Williams' sketchbook.
