Description: A rough sketch with a view from Thorndon, looking towards Lambton Quay, and Te Aro, with Government House and its flagpole in the foreground, the waterfront (Lambton Quay) with several houses visible, Clay Point indicated and Mount Cook beyond it, with the Barracks. Bush with either tree ferns or cabbage trees is indicated in the near foreground. There are three ships in the harbour Attribution: attributed by the Library on cataloguing, 1980, to H J Warre. However the handwriting is not that of Warre, and the style appears less precise than his. This is one of four drawings in the same hand, with the same provenance, (A-172-013 to -016) one of which appears to be a preliminary drawing for a watercolour by Colonel C E Gold. Description: Shows a Maori warrior in the centre foreground, walking in a partly crouched position through low bushy growth, towards the right. He wears a feather cloak and carries a spear. To the left is a stream, flowing quietly between overgrown banks. In the centre background is a fencelike structure under the trees, part of the fencing surrounding the grave site. In the distance, a hill rises to the right. Dated from the date inscribed on another view by Gold taken at the same spot (A-329-014). Description: Shows Tamihana Te Rauparaha's house, built in a combined Maori and European style with carved figures supporting the trellis around the front verandah, weather boards, and a shingled roof. Description: View inside Taupo Pa, at Plimmerton looking out to sea with part of Mana Island out to sea on the right and the South Island in the distance. The palisades of the pa run down to the water's edge on the left, with a raupo whare propped against the fence line. A Maori family (father, mother with a child on her back and a toddler at her side) is walking away from the viewer, and three armed Maori are seated or reclining in the centre foreground, beside a cabbage tree or dracena plant. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Ngati Toa built Taupo Pa probably in the late 1830s or 1840s. According to land court evidence by Wi Parata most of Ngati Kimihia were resident in the South Island until the Wairau Affair in 1843. Wi Parata lived at Taupo with his uncle Te Hiko-o-te-Rangi and the Ngati Te Maunu until his death in 1845, where Te Rauparaha made a speech relating to Taupo stating that it formerly belonged to Te Hiko and was later acquired by Te Rauparaha.
