Description: View looking down onto the roof of a bathhouse over hot springs, a stream winding towards the site with another hidden between cliffs. Mount Tauhara is in the background The watercolour originally accompanied a report by By William Fox 'Hot springs district of the North Island' 1st August 1874 published in the Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives, H. 26, 1874. Fox describes 'About half a mile eastward from the [mouth of the Waikato] River is a small swampy flat ... through which flow two streams ... At the point at which the two unite, a tolerably good bath has been erected by John Loffley, formerly an A.B. sailor in Her Majesty's Navy, who served in the Naval Brigade during the Waikato War. Description: Shows a wharenui with carved barge-boards and entrance porch, two European-style houses, two tents, the lower part of the King's flagstaff inside a fence in the right foreground, and barrels or cooking pots with several people moving around on the marae in front of the wharenui. In the foreground is a pile of planks, with three European men leaning or sitting on it, surveying the scene or conversing. Description: Shows a tall carved gateway on the left, with a group of Maori centre and a pataka (storehouse) on the right; Ruapehu and Tongariro beyond lake in distance. The two children in the foreground are holding kete (flax kits) and there is a dog beneath the carved gateway. There is a flagpole in front of the pataka. There is a watercolour from a similar view, also by Fox, in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia (Ref. no. NK 564). A European traveller is shown in the Australian watercolour, the groups of Maori are different, there is a cooking fire in the centre foreground, flax baskets in front of the pataka, and the pataka is facing the viewer. A photograph of the Australian watercolour is in Drawings & Prints, under the same title as the Alexander Turnbull Library's watercolour. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
