Artist unknown :[Lyttelton. ca 1861].
Date: 1861 - 1862
By: Dawson, R, active 1861-1894; Crowder, John, active 1986-2000
Reference: C-064-029
Description: Shows a view of Lyttelton from the Sumner Road, and shows the bridle path well-formed, a sailing ship at the end of the pier, a church with central steeple, several streets and houses. Similar to the work at C-064-001, and probably by the same artist. The church with three gables and a central spire may be the Methodist Church built on Norwich Quay in 1861. (See photo in W H Scotter's history - illustration 16 following page 86; and photo in "Histroy of Methodism in New Zealand", by William Morley (Wellington, 1900), page 429). That church was shifted to Winchester Street in 1866. Comparisons with photographs indicate that there are fewer buildings than there were by 1862 (see photograph in W H Scotter's "A history of Port Lyttelton" (Christchurch, 1968), illustration no 16 following page 86). The watercolour, prior to conservation treatment (before the Library purchased it), had the name R. Dawson on the backing board. This could either be the artist's name, or a framer's note of a former owner's name. An artist called R. Dawson is known to have painted Lyttelton in 1896 and exhibited with the Canterbury Society of Arts between 1892 and 1894. Dated ca 1860 on assumption that the church shown is the Methodist church built in 1860, and by comparison with 1862 photograph, the relatively fewer houses. Other Titles - Dawson, R. Lyttelton, ca 1861 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - (Partly cut away): [N]o [1] [or :] 78 In the similar work at C-064-001, the building in the right foreground is shown to be the premises of J Drummond Macpherson. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, on sheet 452 x 665 mm.

Description: Shows two bearded surveyors attempting to boil a billy over an open camp fire, in bleak wet weather, on a treeless plateau with mountains in the background. One man, smoking a pipe, is dressed in a torn jacket, and attempts to warm his hands over the fire. His companion, at the left, tries to shelter the fire from the wind with his hat. At the far left, a miserable dog stands in front of the opening of a tent. The smoke blows from the fire in a direction opposite to what one would expect judging by the slant of the rain. Abbot was part of a surveying party contracted in 1847, with Sydney M Scraggs, northwards along the Taieri plain and further north. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows a view over the Avon River towards the Port Hills, with the houses of Dr Alfred Barker, Mr Guise Brittan and the Lands Office all on Oxford Terrace, close to the Worcester Street Bridge. Dr Barker's house is shown tarred. There is a flag flying outside the Lands Office. A more distant building is the Lyttelton Hotel. A bullock team waits by the riverside, and there is a horse and rider further away on Oxford Terrace. The near side of the river has flax, and a cabbage tree at the right. The view is similar to an original sketch by Dr A C Barker done in 1851, a version of which was reproduced in the Illustrated London news, volume 22, no 616 (9 April 1853), page 268. As the artist is thought to have been only 11-12 years old in 1851, the painting is probably done from memory, or copied from one of Dr A C Barker's sketches, or a reproduction of one of Barker's sketches in the Illustrated London news. There is another version of a very similar view by Ffitch or Fitch, in the Canterbury Museum, also an oil painting. It includes a tent, and has no horse. Quantity: 1 oil(s). Physical Description: Oil on canvas, 500 x 330 mm. Provenance: Previously the work had been in a farmhouse on the West Coast.

Description: Shows a view from near Flagstaff Hill, looking down on Russell and the Bay of Islands, with nine sailing ships with many flags anchored off the bay and one smaller steamship nearing the shore. Paihia is in the background, across the water Attributed by previous owner to Nicholas Chevalier who was an artist on an earlier voyage with the Duke of Edinburgh. However Chevalier was not on the 1869 voyage and the style of the work does not appear to be his. There is no known record of a visit by the Galatea to the Bay of Islands. The ship left Auckland and proceeded to Tahiti. It may have called at the Bay of Islands en route. Inscriptions: No inscriptions on the work itself. Title from mat (discarded by the Library) supplied by a previous dealer. There is an almost identical work in the collection of Auckland Public Library, attributed to J C Hoyte. It is unsigned. The title assigned to it is Looking southwest from Flagstaff Hill over Kororareka. It was formerly in the collection of the Old Colonists Museum, and came into the Library when the Museum closed in 1957. The ships at anchor are assumed to be the American whaling fleet. There are seven ships at anchor. A further, almost identical version of this painting has been identified, housed at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is signed and dated 'C.H. [Kennett] Watkins / 1874', with reference number 2001.100.4397. (Information supplied by Lindsay Alexander, Russell, October 2014). Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
