Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1870s to 1880s, many by unidentified photographers, with several being taken by James Bragge. One that is clearly by Bragge shows his named carriage "J. Bragge. Photographer. Lambton Quay, Wellington" in a photograph taken on the road on the Featherston side of the Rimutaka Hill (on page 18). The first fourteen pages show views of the Pink and White Terraces, each from varying angles. These are followed by views of Ohinemutu. Many of the photographs are unidentified, including one of a meeting house with a group of Maori men, women and children in front. Painted on the maihi are the words "Mauimua Mauiroto Maui", painted fish and Maui in a boat fishing. On page 26 is a photograph of a painting, possibly by Charles Blomfield, showing Lake Rotomahana with the Pink Terraces on the right and the top of the White Terraces in the foreground, beside which there are two men. Description: Album compiled by John and Thomas Royds of Invercargill, in the early 1880s, containing views of Invercargill, Auckland, Wellington, Masterton, Eketahuna (named Ninety Mile Bush), Nelson, Wairau Gorge, Manawatu River Bridge, Lake Guyon, Wakapuaka, Lyttelton, Picton, Maitai Valley, Christchurch, Lake Hawea, Frankton Falls, Lake Wakatipu, Mount Crichton, Arthur's Point, Winton, Mount Larkins, Queenstown, Lake Wanaka, Dunedin, Shag Valley, Palmerston (with a coach in the street), Hamilton's Station near Naseby, Breaksea Sound, Chalky Inlet, the Roaring Meg stream, Cromwell, Te Aroha pa, and the Pink Terrace. Also includes carte de visite Maori portraits. Photographers represented include James Bragge (scenes in Wellington and Wairarapa), W T L Travers (views of Lake Guyon), Hart, Campbell & Co (scenes in Otago), and Herbert Deveril (views of te Aroha Pa). Description: Album of views compiled by Alexander Fisher, MD RN, during his service as a surgeon aboard HMS Endymion. The album comprises: Photographs collected during the cruise of the Flying Squadron, under the command of Rear Admiral G T Phipps Hornby, during 1869-1870, which carried HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. Included are views of Plymouth, Portsea, Madeira, Brazil (Bahia and Rio de Janiero), South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Japan, British Columbia, Hawaii and Chile. Photographs collected during a cruise in the Mediterranean during the 1870s, including views of Malta, Syria, Jerusalem, Venice, Egypt (Alexandria, Cairo, Pyramids, the Sphinx), Gibraltar and Seville Photographers represented include William Thomas Locke Travers (1819-1903), James Bragge (1833?-1908), Felice A Beato (1825-1908?). Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900), was captain of HMS Galatea and commander of the Flying Squadron, which visited New Zealand in 1869 and 1870.
