Description: Photo of a war memorial at the Waihi Cemetery at Normanby showing names of men belonging to the colonial forces who died in engagements during 1868. Photographed in 1924 by Robert E Wells. Inscriptions: Verso - top centre - Photos of Historical Interest; Verso - centre - Print 1. The memorial created to those who fell during three engagements in the Maori War. This memorial is to be seen at the little-known Waihi Cemetery at Normanby, South Taranaki. The cemetery is laid out on the side of a hill, known as the "Waihi Redoubt". Near the summit, the hill is very strongly entrenched, the trenches, 10 to 12 ft deep, being in a perfect state of preservation. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). This is to be seen on the summit of an old Maori fort, close to the famous British Waihi Redoubt. The trenches just below, surround it on 4 sides in the shape of a square. Quite a number of "Maori holes" are to be found on the far side of the building. The Waihi cemetery is laid out on the "southern" slope of this fortified hill. The carved poles were presented to the Normanby Town Board, after their removal from the Christchurch Exhibition.
