Description: Group outside a cob cottage (in central Otago?), circa 1870. From left to right: Charles and Elizabeth Kerr, Elizabeth Ritchie, (Mr Hill?). Photographer unidentified. "Cob construction was used in New Zealand from the earliest pakeha settlement. Cob is a wet mix of clay, tempered with chopped straw and cow dung, which sets hard when it dries. Walls are formed in layers, without moulds or formwork, on a base of brick or stone. The finished work is then plastered to make it waterproof, and topped with a well-thatched overhanging roof. The method is simple but very long lasting when well built." (Information from caption used in "Darling, I'm home!" display).
