"These are taken but would sir care to look at something else?" 26 August 2009

Date: 2009

From: Hubbard, James, 1949-: Digital caricatures and cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0012135

Description: Prime Minister John Key welcomes Pita Sharples, Co-leader of the Maori Party, to a seat in the sun but points him towards a seat that represents 'Foreshore seabed concession' because all the 'Auckland supercity seats' are taken. Refers to the argument about Maori seats on the supercity council which Pita Sharples advocates. The suggestion in the cartoon is that because the Maori Party has already won what can be seen as a concession in the Foreshore and Seabed debate, (a review) they should not expect to get the seats that they want on the supercity council. Michelle Boag is a senior executive at Momentum in the public relations field, and Dame Jenny Shipley is on the Momentum Consulting Group board. The CV scandal refers to Momentum's part in the appointment of Roger Wilce as a top scientist in the Defence Force and his dismissal after his credentials were found to be false. Momentum was contracted to recruit about 45 Auckland Super City executives but Ms Boag said she would not be involved after claims that her links with Mr Banks' mayoral campaign created a conflict of interest. Michelle Boag has been involved in an email scandal in which she asked the recipient in an email bearing the company's logo to let her know if they wanted to contribute to Mr Banks' campaign. In another email also bearing Momentum livery and under the heading "John Banks for Mayor", Ms Boag says she wants "a more experienced Mayor for the first Super City which will also help the National Party to another term in central government". From: Hubbard, James, 1949-: Digital caricatures and cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0014797

Description: Minister for the Rugby World Cup, Murray McCully, has 'managed to secure the services of an acknowledged World Cup Event Manager' to help him decide on 'Party Central'. Before him is an octopus which has latched itself to a box labeled 'somewhere else' as opposed to another labelled 'Auckland'. Refers to the slow start and indecisiveness around the creating of the events centre 'Party Central' for the Rugby World Cup. The octopus is a two-year old "psychic" octopus, who achieved national celebrity status in Germany for having a 100 percent success rating in choosing match winners. English-born Paul the mollusk, who lives in The Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany, chose the winner for every match that Germany played in, having predicted that Germany would beat Australia, Ghana, England and Argentina but lose to Serbia. Paul makes his "predictions" when two plastic boxes are lowered into his tank, both containing a mussel and the German national flag in one box and the flag of the opposing team in the other. [Auckland transport needs] 17 March, 2009

From: Hubbard, James, 1949-: Digital caricatures and cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0010748

Refers to Government proposed a 6c increase in national fuel tax, to help fund Auckland's transport and roading plans. The cartoon is reminiscent of the famous photograph of a single man standing before a tank in Tiananmen Square in Beijing during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 that culminated in the Tiananmen Square Massacre. The protests were sparked by the death of pro-market and pro-democracy official, Hu Yaobang, whom protesters wanted to mourn. Speaking of mining... 5 April 2010

Date: 2010

From: Hubbard, James, 1949-: Digital caricatures and cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0014057

Description: The cartoon shows the entrance to the 'Sharples Gold Mine' which is in a hillside with the features of Pita Sharples, Co-leader of the Green Party. Text above reads 'Speaking of mining...' A man muttering 'Fools Gold' pushes a wheelbarrow loaded with a great nugget that bears the words 'Democracy is an artificial political concoction'. According to Dr Sharples, the essence of democracy is not one person one vote, which he describes as an "artificial political concoction" but "goals towards equity ... and inclusiveness". Dr Sharples' ideas about the nature of democracy are being vented because he is frustrated by the Government's refusal to set aside two seats on the Auckland super-city council for Maori - because of this he believes that democracy is failing Maori, that the principal of one person one vote will not give Maori representation. The reference to mining is because the government intends to test drill for minerals in several national parks. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
