Description: Depicts the ceremony of choosing the first National flag of New Zealand by the Maori chiefs from one of three designs, witnessed by a grathering of missionaries, settlers, commanders of 10 British and 3 American ships. The ceremony took place at the house of the British Resident, Mr James Busby at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on the 20th March 1834 with a salute of 21 guns from HMS Alligator (in distance). The flag that was chosen is being pointed at by a chief holding up a greenstone mere. The design chosen was the red cross of St George on a white background and a small red St George's cross in the top left hand corner on a blue background. In each of these quarters is an 8 pointed star. An enlargement of the flag is in the bottom lefthand corner of the postcard. The flag was called the Flag of United Tribes of New Zealand (1834-1840) The flag was adopted by Shaw Savill & Company as its house flag in 1858 it having ceased to be the national flag when New Zealand came under the British sovereignty Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A 1969 photomechanical reproduction, taken from a lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. Description: In part this album revolves around a family (of William Russell Morris) whose centre is the house at 9 Roscoe Terrace, Wadestown. It also revolves around one of the women in that household, Dorothy, who probably compiled the album. There are a number of women family members of different ages with whom (it would seem) she was close. There are also her colleagues at the Wellington Free Kindergarten, Taranaki Street, and the Newtown Kindergarten where she taught during the 1920s. A large part of this album is taken up with images of children, and by the end of the 1930s it looks as though Dorothy was an infant teacher at Marsden Collegiate School, Karori, Wellington, group photographs of pupils taken between 1933 and 1948. Holidays, and group outings sometimes involving picnics make up another large group of images. The only holiday outside New Zealand is to Fiji in 1920, and most of the images taken during this trip are of Indians and Indian events This is very much a woman's compilation. Men as a generalisation are few and far between and somewhat in the background when they appear. Thus it is also a good source of information on the clothing of women and children between 1920 and 1948 An envelope with four loose prints is inserted at the front of the album. Page 49 contains a newspaper cutting, showing a view of the tram stop at Moorhouse Street, Wadestown, with tram tracks and a tram, with bare fields on either side. Other - The school photograph at top left hand corner of page 39, is reproduced in the book "Marsden School" by Tosti Murray (1967), illustration no. 45. It identifies the class, the year, and all the pupils in the image. Other - The name C H Morris is taken from the Photo Archive Albums index, which says C H Morris was the photographer of three albums, and that he was a postmaster-general in the 1920s. There is no C H Morris listed in Wise's Post Office Directory, however William Russell Morris is listed as Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department; and listed as living at 9 Roscoe Terrace. Mt Eden prison guards try to work out how prisoners are getting out and drugs getting in. Admidst the ruins of Belgrade Milosevic stands victorious. The Police consider getting rid of the INCIS computer to a crime consortium believing it will stop them dead in their tracks like it has done to the Police. Milosevic uses peace talks to buy time to destroy war crimes evidence. Police operations are stoped in their tracks by the weight of the INCIS computer disaster. Comment on retailers selling liquor to underagedrinkers The Serbs pull out of Kosovo as Nato forces enter the area. Comment on the New Zealand cricket team making hard work out of limited over cricket. The Soviets welcome the Nato forces to Yugoslavia. Shows a ship load of Chinese boat people on a collision course with New Zealand as the National coalition Government passes emergency legislation allowing mass, indefinite detention of asylum seekers. Inland Revenue Department assures the public that all small and powerless taxpayers are bullied equally. Serbia puts the blame for large scale death and destruction in Kosovo on the Nato bombing campaign. Shows newspaper ad for a crown entity boss, all perks and no responsibility. Minister of Immigration, Tuariki Delamere sets one standard for migrants and another for himself and his family. Jenny Shipley shoots TV news presenter, John Hawkesby in the head with a rubber arrow. He received a substantial pay-out when his contract was terminated. The Mongrel Mob supports Tony Ryall's plans to introduce tougher penalties for home invasion, if it relates to their homes being invaded but not their neighbours. Comment on breach of privilege by the Prime Minister Jenny Shipley and TVNZ over the John Hawkesby pay-out. Rugby supporters froze to their seats during a recent rugby match. Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front.
