Bound by Parliamentary Library, using blank pages to bulk out the contents. Red buckram, half red morocco Catalogued by Parliamentary Library as the work of I W Wilson and ca 1910. The signature and style is that of L W Wilson, although the signature appears to read I W Wilson. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds the original watercolour for one reproduction, the view of Lake Manapouri (reference number A-123-002). It also holds second copies of several other reproductions, 5 with a separate printed portfolio cover titled 'New Zealand scenery. From water colour drawings by L W Wilson Esq. S and W Mackay, booksellers, Wellington'(reference number A-192-018/022). The portfolio-style cover with the latter group includes cotton ties opposite a spine binding, suggesting that the reproductions were unbound. Dating: Wilson left New Zealand in 1904. He probably had these copies made before leaving. The view of Manawatu Gorge was also published as a postcard. The Library holds a copy at E-279-160 sent in 1906. Title supplied by Library. Description: A pocket inserted inside the front cover holds two photographs of wedding celebrations at a British Army regiment in India. One of the scenes shows a large party of men and women, including British and Indian men in uniform. These were taken circa 1910. The main body of the album contains views of Canterbury, Otago and the West Coast of the South Island, taken around 1877 by an unidentified photographer. Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly showing facets of Christchurch and Lyttelton. The first scenes are a group portrait of men and women with the caption `Camera club (flashlight)'; two photographs of a wedding, the first a group portrait, and the second the bride and groom, both scenes taken outside on a lawn outside a conservatory; the altar at St Thomas' (Newtown, Wellington); and an exterior and an interior view of St Barnabas' Church, Norfolk Island. The rest of the album is scenes of the Christchurch and Lyttelton areas, including interior and exterior views of Christ Church Cathedral and of St Michaels' Church, Christchurch; views of Lyttelton and the Lyttelton Wharves; the Canterbury Museum and its gardens; Hagley Park and the Avon River. The wedding groups, a young woman wearing a mortar board and gown on the steps of a church, and a family of four with their dog, are the only portraits, none of whom are identified. Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Shows Armagh Street bridge over Avon River from Cambridge Terrace, with two cabbage trees in foreground and other exotic trees. Cathedral spire on left, rooftops of central city buildings, including United Service Hotel building and Post Office tower centre right, and Port Hills with Castle Rock beyond. Photographs of Armagh Street Bridge show wrought ironwork rather than solid stone in the top section. United Service Hotel building was under construction in 1885 and was completed about 1886.
