There was no large pa at Ship Cove in 1820, nor did Ship Cove itself become a great whaling port, although Te Awaiti, at the entrance to Tory Channel, some distance away in Queen Charlotte Sound, did become a whaling station. Description: Reproduction of a watercolour by Louis-Auguste de Sainson. A view from a hill to the south of Paihia, looking north along the beach line, with the houses and gardens of the Church Missionary Society station, home of the Rev. Henry Williams and his family. Two European men and a small boy are standing on the hill in the foreground beside a tree. The artist visited the site in March 1827. A pencil drawing by Sainson of this view, dated 12 March 1827, is in the Archives Nationales, Paris, (Marine JJ 102 A f 14); and the original watercolour is in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. There are also later engraved versions of the same view, one in Dumont d'Urville's 'Voyage pittoresque autour du monde', Paris, 1835, Vol 2, p. 356 and one in Domeny de Rienzi's 'Oceanie' Vol 2, Paris 1836, plate 174. Description: An extensive view of Jacks Bay (Manawaora Bay, Bay of Islands) looking down from a hill to the south of the bay, along the foreshore and out towards the sea. A ship, probably the Astrolabe, is shown anchored out in the bay and a small schooner is shown at the water's edge. The artist visited the Bay of Islands in 1827, and signs of European habitation are slight. In 2005 the property was owned by his great-grandson Lindsay Johnston and wife Valda. In the intervening years further land was added to the initial block making a total of 536 acres.
