Description: Chiefly photographs of the aftermath of the Tarawera eruption in 1886, many taken by Charles Spencer. Images include Dr Hector's party; views of mud-covered country; damage to buildings at the village of Te Wairoa; Henry Lundius and J C Blythe standing outside the hen-house in which several survivors took refuge; and views of the new lake formed after the eruption. Several views show the area before the eruption. The last two photographs in the album show the Manawatu Gorge bridge under construction, and the engine room at the Government Printing Office in Wellington. Description: Photographs taken during the 1880s, chiefly by George Valentine, and Charles Spencer, both of whom visited Mount Tarawera before and after the eruption of June 1886. Inserted in a pocket at the front of the album are images cut from the paper "Newsview", June 1949, showing historic photographs of the eruption, and another double-page from the Weekly News (June 6, 1951) on the "65th Anniversary of the Mount Tarawera catastrophe". The latter article notes that mud, estimated at 75 ft in depth, covered a vast area. The album includes images taken before the eruption, and shows the same areas irreparable damaged. Many show the Pink and White Terraces, the village of Te Wairoa, and the massive rift in the mountain; also a group led by Sir James Hector to study the aftermath and changes wrought by the eruption. Description: Views of Mount Tarawera, Lake Tarawera, the Black Crater in eruption, Echo Lake Crater, and the point where the great Waimangu Geyser burst forth some years later. [The geyser played between 1900 and 1904]. (See Wise's New Zealand guide). Some of the photographs were taken by Charles Spencer, one of the members of Stephenson Percy Smith's party which surveyed the area in 1886 after the Tarawera eruption; and some photographs were taken by Josiah Martin. Description: Album of photographs, all taken by Charles Spencer, in the Rotorua District around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption of June 1886; except the last photograph in the album. This was taken by an unidentified photographer, showing "Waitangi Falls where Treaty with Maoris was signed". The views of Mount Tarawera showed the area before the eruption, including the village of Te Ariki, at the head of Lake Tarawera, the Pink and White Terraces, Lake Tarawera and Rotomahana. Views after the eruption showed the first group to ascend Tarawera. This was Percy Smith's party, of which Charles Spencer was a member. These images show the damage done to the village of Te Wairoa, the Pink and White Terraces, and showed the enormous changes to the landscape, including the rift which developed between Mount Tarawera and Rotomahana. Description: Album containing photographs of the Mount Tarawera area before and after the eruption in 1886. Some of the images are signed "J M" (Josiah Martin), many showing the mountain after the eruption, with views of the great fissure, and probable locations of the Pink and White Terraces and Te Ariki Pa. At the beginning of the album there is an article from the Times (London), dated Friday, July 30, 1886, about the eruption and its probable effect on travellers to the area. This is followed by a letter to The Times from James Fergusson (previous Governor-General to New Zealand) who was writing to lessen the effects of dire warnings in The Times article. Following The Times article is a hand-written letter to `Henry C Geare, Esq., 67 Lincolns Inn Fields, London', sent from Auckland on 14 September 1886. (Signature indecipherable). Sketch maps of the Hot Lakes District are also included. Description: Album of photographs relating to a trip taken by a group travelling on the first "Motor Reliability Contest" in 1906; probably created and in part photographed by Robert M McKnight. The contest involved ten cars (4 Daracqs, 2 Cadillacs, and 1 Rover, 1 steam car, 1 Oldsmobile and 1 Leyland) travelling 400 miles from Auckland to Taupo and back. Photographs relating to the contest, including scenes photographed during the trip are on even numbered pages from 2 to 36, possibly taken by R M McKnight in 1906; odd numbered pages from 1 to 63, were taken by unidentified professional photographers, circa the 1880s to 1890s; all relating to the route taken on the 1906 road contest. Most of the earlier photographs are scenes in the thermal area around the Wairakei and Bay of Plenty Regions and include images of the Pink and White Terraces taken before and after the 1886 Tarawera Eruption. One of these earlier images shows "Macandrew and party at Wairakei." Views of the Motor Reliablity Contest show scenes taken on the route; groups of people involved; lineups of all ten cars; and one car fording a river. Loose print of view of Huka Falls, from this album, at PA7-49-08. The "Motor reliability contest" was held under the ausspices of the Auckland Automobile Association (Press, Volume LXII, Issue 12451, 14 March 1906, Page 7, https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19060314.2.31). contests of the same name were held in Melbourne, Australia, and other countires.
