Description: Shows the foreshore at Paihia with three canoes at the water's edge, and the houses, huts and gardens of the Church Missionary Society station back from the beach. A flag, probably the Union Jack, is flying from one of the hills behind the houses. Published as a wood engraving in the Church Missionary quarterly papers, no. 79, Michaelmas, 1835, frontispiece, with title Mission station, Paihia, New Zealand.. Description: Shows a view of a tree on a promontory between two bays of the Bay of Islands, with the bay on the left showing some signs of settlement (a fence and a stand of trees). In both bays, canoes are pulled up on the shore, and groups of people are engaged in various activities, some on horseback. There are several sailboats out in the harbour, and there may be some settlement on the land to the far right distance, possibly Russell. The closest view is of the activity in the bay in the right foreground. The bay in the left foreground may be Paihia Other Titles - Paihia Quantity: 1 oil(s). Description: View from the south end of Paihia Beach, probably in the 1840s, looking north along the beach with a row of houses at the foot of the hill to the left. Several Maori with their canoes are on shore, and a food storage platform appears outside the fenced area surrounding the European houses. Includes William Williams' house, a two-storied residence, built of stone and mortar, with 3 dormer windows, burnt down 15 Feb. 1856 Catalogued by both Sotheby's and McArthur's as the work of Cuthbert Clarke. However on both stylistic and handwriting grounds (c.f. Merrett's work in A.T.L. and the British Library), the work appears to be by Merrett.
