Description: The Hutt Road (a cart track) at the bottom of the steep bush-clad Western Hills on the right. The buildings of the Scottish settlement at Kaiwharawhara can be seen on flat land in the middle distance to the right, with suggested outlines of a few houses in Thorndon beyond. Description: Shows the Hutt Road (as a cart track) at the bottom of the steep bush-clad Western Hills on the right. The suggestion of a settlement can be seen at the water's edge in the distance. The albumen print is of the old Government House in Auckland, partly obscured by bush. Description: Kaiwharawhara Valley, Wellington, looking out towards the harbour, with a single-storied gabled house with an out-building, the whole surrounded by a fence and one or two trees, on the flat. The house was the first Wellington residence of Mary Marshall, nee Swainson, sister of the artist. The hills are shown newly denuded of bush, with some erosion. Description: A large two to three storied watermill in the Ngaio Gorge, with its water wheel on the left and water rushing through. The roofs of two other houses with smoke rising from the brick chimney of one, visible in front and a path to the right. A dam and a small lake can be seen behind the mill. Attribution on stylistic grounds The mill was built in Ngaio Gorge, in the 1840s and 1850s, where the Mobil petrol tanks are now located, about half way up the Gorge. Description: Arrangement of printed and handwritten text on blue ticket. A border of looped lines runs down the left hand side. The ticket is signed by William Gill, first gate keeper at the Kai Warra Toll Bar. The first toll gate was established at Kaiwharawhara in 1863, and remained there until 1890 (See Onslow historian, volume 10, number 2 (1980), pages 13-21). The ticket is for sixpence (6d). A horse, saddled or harnessed, would have cost sixpence to get through the toll gate. A mule or an ass would also have cost sixpence if saddled or harnessed. For a full set of the toll charges, see the Onslow historian article above, page 13. The toll gate was installed in 1863, and was unpopular; see http://www.wcl.govt.nz/heritage/onslowboroughcouncil.html, where the following statement appears: "One of the main reasons these areas lobbied to break away and create the new Onslow Borough was the resentment many residents felt towards a toll-gate which had been established by the Hutt County Council on the Hutt Road at Kaiwharawhara. This imposed a toll of 1 shilling on all vehicular traffic entering or leaving Wellington (the equivalent of a charge of about $5 today) with saddled horses being charged half that rate. This was a major revenue stream for the Hutt County [after 1876] but much of this money was spent on distant road improvements that provided no benefit to those living closer to Wellington". Description: Palisades of the pa at Kaiwharawhara, at the water's edge, with raupo houses, with verandahs and tree-trunk columns in the foreground, with one Maori man reclining in the left foreground and a woman and child seated by one of the whare. Two canoes, with Maori chapel of raupo beyond them in the middle ground and a European yacht beyond that. On the background hill to the right, the whalers' lookout "Tutaewera", aand on the central hill, a zig-zag Maori path running up the Ngaio Gorge area. The background range shows British Peak on the left and Mount Kaukau on the right. The file print during 1970s and 80s attributed to John Pearse and titled "Wellington". The painting is pre-1845, since the Hutt Road is not yet formed. The architecture of the raupo huts on the left shows the whalers' influence, with the tree-trunk verandah posts. Description: Kaiwharawhara stream and bridge in foreground; across the stream is a raupo hut and John Lodge's two-storeyed public house (also known as the Rainbow Hotel or Kaiwharawhara Hotel). The raupo whare is either one built for road-makers, or the immigration barracks built by Te Kaeaea (Taringa Kuri) to house Scottish colonists put ashore at Kaiwharawhara in December 1840. The area is shown before the 1855 earthquake, which raised the flat land in this part, and made the stream more shallow. The road up the hill on the near side of the stream is the Porirua Bridle Path, 6 feet wide. On the far side of the stream is the original Porirua coach road. Description: A rocky foreshore and cliff in the foreground, possibly Kaiwharawhara, or further along the Hutt Road at Rocky Point looking towards Khandallah and Ngaio. Only two houses are shown amidst bushy hills. In the foreground a European man is on horseback, accompanied by a Maori man and woman. Another European is standing near a Maori man while the latter pushes a small canoe out from the rocks. A single yacht is in the water. Date of 1865 is suggested because an F. R. Chesney wrote to James Coutts Crawford from Tasmania on geological matters in December 1864 and may have come later to Wellington as a visitor. Wellington became the capital in 1865. The view appears to be quite early with only two houses showing and Maori shown in partial European dress. The signature on the letter from Tasmania matches that on the watercolour. Chesney's letter makes it clear that he is a resident in Tasmania and that English is probably his first language, suggesting that the French title may have been added by a later owner Other Titles - Nouvelle Zelande, Port de Nicholson.
