Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Other views show areas of the South Island, including Dunedin City, Oamaru, Christchurch; and the North island including Auckland, Thames District (a number showing aspects of gold mining in the area). Description: Album of tourist views of New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic Islands, chiefly taken by John Richard Morris, Jnr, circa 1890s. Places and subjects listed above where identified. The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. Album leaf with 5 photographs of Wellington, ca 1860s-1900s, including preparations for visit of Duke of Edinburgh to Wellington, wedding of Ted and Amy Yates, portrait of a woman, Te Aroha Bathhouse and fire damage in Lambton Quay. Duke of Edinburgh visited New Zealand in 1869. Cadman Bathhouse opened in 1898. Quantity: 4 b&w original photographic print(s). 1 album leaf with 5 b&w original photographic prints. Provenance: Donated by Wainuiomata Historical Society, October 2002, through Mrs Vicky Alexander. The photographs were given to the society by the late Mrs Claire Burdan, whose husband was descended from Richard & Mary Prouse, and from the Dixon family, of the Dixon aerated water business. The photographs appear to have come from these families.

Description: A whare and trees in the left foreground, a canoe being rowed by three men on the lake in the centre and the White Terraces in the background, with clouds of steam above them. Probably one of the earliest depictions of the Terraces On the verso is a poem in the artist's hand, to his wife, Rangi Kawau (Rangi Koa), with marginal notes on the Maori words, in the hand of Edward Shortland. Inscriptions: Mount recto - beneath image - Title in ink in the artist's hand Compare two other version of this drawing by Merrett. One dating from 1842 is in the British Library's Grey Albums (Add. Ms 19953 f. 99, pl. 268) an ink and pencil drawing entitled 'Rotomahana, one of the Rotorua Lakes with a view of the hot springs and the ascent to it by natural steps of salyx'; also the Turnbull Library's A-089-008, an ink and wash sketch, almost identical to this one.
