Description: Nine-part panorama, forming a complete circle, of the view from the parsonage attached to St James' Anglican Church, Lower Hutt. The parsonage itself is shown, along with surrounding houses and farms, cleared land, bush and the encompassing hills. There are cows, horses and a man using a plough pulled by two horses Extended Title - South Eastern part of Valley, looking towards Wellington. The distant hills are those lying behind Wellington. Description: Shows Weld's third New Zealand home "Brackenfield" near Amberley with his wife and two oldest children in the foreground. A horse is beside Mrs Weld and the two children. The house and garden look newly established with clumps of cabbage trees and flaxes in flower and flower gardens closer to the house. There is a conservatory to the right of the house and another building, probably a barn, to the far right. To the left of the house is a small chapel. The Welds married in March 1859, so the two children, two-and-a half years later are likely to be the two oldest. Weld purchased the initial 304 acres of land for Brackenfield in July 1861. The 16-room kauri house, its timber shipped from Auckland, was demolished in 1964. Weld also laid out the park-like grounds and imported English deer and game birds. The chapel, one of the first Catholic churches in Canterbury, was moved from the Brackenfield entrance in the 1950s to the main road through Amberley Other Titles - Amberley Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Brackenfield N Z F.A.W. Description: Shows a view over the Avon River towards the Port Hills, with the houses of Dr Alfred Barker, Mr Guise Brittan and the Lands Office all on Oxford Terrace, close to the Worcester Street Bridge. Dr Barker's house is shown tarred. There is a flag flying outside the Lands Office. A more distant building is the Lyttelton Hotel. A bullock team waits by the riverside, and there is a horse and rider further away on Oxford Terrace. The near side of the river has flax, and a cabbage tree at the right. The view is similar to an original sketch by Dr A C Barker done in 1851, a version of which was reproduced in the Illustrated London news, volume 22, no 616 (9 April 1853), page 268. As the artist is thought to have been only 11-12 years old in 1851, the painting is probably done from memory, or copied from one of Dr A C Barker's sketches, or a reproduction of one of Barker's sketches in the Illustrated London news. There is another version of a very similar view by Ffitch or Fitch, in the Canterbury Museum, also an oil painting. It includes a tent, and has no horse. Quantity: 1 oil(s). Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. There is "an immense pile of dried sharks" ready for consumption in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. Published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library. The image was republished in 1890 as a supplement to Brett's Almanac with the title Maori feast at Remuera, and in 1969 as a photolithographic reproduction. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, (with title The New-Zealand festival), which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library, Dunedin. Words below the image read: The Maori feast depicted in this picture was one of then largest ever held in New Zealand. It was given by the Waikato chiefs. The site chosen was in the vicinity of Mt Hobson, at Remuera, near Auckland. About four thousand natives were present. A shed 400 yards long had been erected and was covered with blankets; and tents decorated with little flags, dotted the ground. The provisions comprised 11,000 baskets of potatoes, 9,000 sharks, 100 pigs, and large quantities of tea, tobacco, and sugar. A thousand blankets had been provided as presents. Governor Fitzroy, with his suite, visited the meeting on the 11th May 1844, when 1,600 natives, armed with guns and tomahawks, danced the wardance. The assembling of so large a force near the infant capital caused some uneasiness among the settlers, but admirable order was maintained throughout. The various tribes were accompanied by their missionaries, and religious services were well attended. The feast lasted about a week. The Library holds an almost identical watercolour at C-030-017 Liardet was passing through Tuamarina to investigate iron sand deposits in the Nelson area when he painted this view. Physical Description: Photograph of watercolour 240 x 350 mm Provenance: Cowan left the painting with the Rutherford family at Canvastown and when their possessions were dispersed, an aunt of the owner bought the picture, said to be an "oil and watercolour with Indian Ink" [i.e. probably watercolour with Indian ink, possibly with gum arabic].
