Description: Coastal profiles of Cape Foulwind (near Westport, West Coast, South Island) and its surrounding landscape in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. This was the first area of New Zealand seen by Tasman. Each profile has a lengthy inscription in Dutch below it. Dutch title is translated into English. Further translation of lower inscription reads: Thus appears the Staten Landt to south of the rocky point when you sail along the coast and views of rocky point which appear thus as you can see here below. Description: Ten seated Maori men rowing a canoe, with one man standing at the prow on the right. The canoe appears to be double-hulled. All the men have topknot hairstyles. Derived from Gilsemans' 'View of Murderers' Bay' from Abel Tasman's journal and shows Maori in Golden Bay at the time of Tasman's attempted landing on 19 December 1642. Description: Golden Bay in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. A canoe of Maori men in the foreground, and two views of Tasman's ships, the Heemskerck and the Zeehaen (both flying the Dutch flag), sailing away in the left foreground, and surrounded by canoes and firing their canon in the middle distance. A rowboat (the cockboat of the Zeehaen) is between the two ships, with its occupants being attacked in the centre. Also in the left foreground can be seen the Heemskerck's pinnace towing the Zeehaen's cockboat back to the two ships after the attack. The hills of Golden Bay form a backdrop to the scene. The canoe in the foreground appears to be double-hulled. The rowers all have topknot hairstyles. The man standing on the right at the prow of the canoe is wearing a woven garment, covering his shoulders and tied at the breast, while the others have loin-cloths, and in one case, a garment that envelopes the torso.
