Core samples are taken from the hull of the New Zealand entrant to the America's Cup. 1986 - the International Year of Peace - $1,746,000,000,000 spent on weapons. Mother's Day again. Burglar makes himself at home. General election candidates begin their hand-shaking tour of the rural areas. There's a big turnout for the rugby on election day. Description: Elsie Margaret Mann born Reefton. Moved to Greymouth when six weeks old. Outlines family background - paternal grandfather was Rev John Mann who worked for the Charles Wesley Missions in England and moved to Australia. He met and married a widow (Mrs Fry) and came to find gold in the West Coast. Explains that when the Waimungaroa river ran out of gold, father moved to Waihi for more prospecting. Talks about mother's family who ran a boarding house (Gordon's boarding house) at Waitekauri. Describes happy childhood and work experience on leaving school - got contract for delivering post and the Herald to farms at Waitekauri on horseback - eventually becoming postmistress of Waikino Post Office until it was closed down ca 1944. Recalls working for a Government Home Aid Service in Auckland for two years - going to homes helping mothers who had babies. Recalls the closing of the mine in Waihi (1952) and describes the effect it had on the town.
