In 1918 Hutt Girls' School Ltd established an Anglican private school for girls, Chilton St James School, in Lower Hutt. When the Chilton House School closed in 1930, Chilton St James School purchased their goodwill, and incorporating the name into the school. Description: Letters and journal of Anne Catherine Wilson, edited by M G Armstrong, with appendices, list of mss and printed sources consulted, genealogical notes re Wilson and Hawker families, photographs (photocopies) of family members and residences. Photocopies of holograph letters of Anne to her husband, 1835-1838; and photocopy of Anne's shipboard diary for 1832. Anne Wilson was the wife of the missionary, John Alexander Wilson who was attached to the Church Missionary Society. The couple left England on board the `Camden', a convict vessel bound for NSW in 1932, and arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1833. Anne spent most of the next five years at the mission station at Puriri, near Thames, with other missionary wives involved in raising her children, school teaching and household chores. She was constantly separated from her husband who spent long periods travelling through troubled areas of Tauranga, Matamata and Roturua. The harsh life took its toll on Anne, and after a long illness she died at Tauranga in Nov 1838. Source of title - Supplied title Other Titles - My hand will write what my heart dictates... Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand. Dicken, 1879; sister Ada Dicken, 1876-1899, Beatrice `Bebe' Knight, 1899, and Eleanor Inman, 1873-1899; Emma Packe, n.d.; her aunt Augusta Parker, 1875-1889; and Amelia Soder, 1885; referring to domestic events. Includes reminiscences of her childhood in England written between 1891 and 1905. Also essays, recipe books, poetry, sketches and other writings, as well as some personal material associated with her husband who had a private school for boys at French Farm, Akaroa Includes shipboard diary kept by T S Baker on board the Dallam Tower, 11 May-26 Jul 1873, and a fragment of the original passenger list. The ship left London in May 1873. The ship encountered a cyclone in July 1873 which dismasted the ship. Some passengers were transshipped to the `Cape Clear' for Sydney and others stayed on the `Dallam Tower' to Melbourne where they transshipped to the SS Albion for the final voyage to New Zealand Josephine `Dodo' Dicken emigrated from England in 1873 with her father Thomas and sisters and brothers. The Family settled on a property at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. She married Thomas Southey Baker in Christchurch, 17 December 1878. They had four daughters. Description: Photographs taken by architect William Charles Chatfield of his Island Bay home called Hurston in 1899. Includes exterior views of house, house in its garden setting, and the garden, with studies of native trees in garden. Also interior views of rooms, furniture and individual paintings and portraits. Photographs of people, including child with teddy bear, formal potraits, man with a dog, people in open carriage, and family in garden. People on south coast beach, and vistas of coast with studies of rocks and sea. Some views of the interior of a church, showing pews, altar and decorations. Also wood carving, probably done by one of the women of the household - a popular craft activity in the late 19th and early 20th century. Topics include the 1848 revolutions, an indignant account of the Second Spring of the Catholic hierarchy, the Crimean War, the European War 1914-1918; strikes and most social or religious movements of the time. Also typescript of Catherine Orbell's voyage to New Zealand in the ship "Mariner". Charles's correspondence include his mother Ann, sisters Eliza, Della and Mary, which continue after Charles emigration to New Zealand in 1849, up to June 1855 when Mary wrote to report Dell's death. Ellinor's correspondence deals chiefly with family and religious matters, including letters from her mother Caroline, 1871-1872; sister Annie, 1872-1874, and Mary, 1868-1872; cousin Caroline Abraham, 1868-1872; Alice Lloyd, 1875; Mary Ann Martin, 1872; A M Nihill, en route to England on the Chatham, 1856; Sarah Sewyn, 1867-1868; and Elizabeth Sewell, 1865. Source of title - Supplied title Ellinor met Charles Hunter Brown in Auckland during 1860, where she was staying with relatives Caroline and Archdeacon Charles Abraham. Description: Chiefly family letters from William Bolland, first minister at New Plymouth, 1843-1847; and from his wife Jane, after his death. Also two letters from Bishop Selwyn, and one from John Morgan, Wanganui to Rev W E Bolland, Norfolk, England, dated 1910 Included are three letters by William Bolland to his mother Sarah Bolland. In two of them William describes his happiness at having married Jane Wright. They were married in 1841, and sailed for Taranaki the same year. In three letters written by Jane from New Zealand she describes their arrival, life as a clergyman's wife, her home, and nursing her son through an illness.
