Description: Sketches depicting incidents arising out of a taua or raiding party visiting Parawera settlement to exact revenge after a case of adultery. The marae, various groupings of iwi, dances, fights, haka, horseriding, and competitions are depicted, along with a visit from the police. The Parawera group were Ngati Apakura, Te Wherowhero's iwi, and the visitors in search of payment were Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Hourua and Ngati Koroki. Ngati Haua are also mentioned in one sketch. Description: Comical drawings of officers of the Pandora, along with Gold Commissioner, Charles Heaphy, at the Coromandel goldfields The hand-writing is that of Theodore Morton Jones, the drawing by Charles Heaphy. The officers on the expedition were Lieut. Jones and Messrs Oke, William Stanley, Cuming, William Blackney, Andrew Farmer, Leck, Thomas Hooper Kerr and Ellis. The Pandora's Master in 1852 was Byron Drury and her surgeon was John Jolliffe and they are both mentioned in the captions to the drawings. Extended Title - Spine title: Drawings of the Coromandel gold field. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s) containing 4 cartoons in 1/2 morocco binding. Physical Description: 4 pencil and watercolour drawings 140 x 230 mm Provenance: By descent from Rear-Admiral T. Morton Jones, who was serving as a Lieutenant aboard H. M. S. Pandora, stationed off Auckland in Sept-Oct. 1852. He joined a party of fellow-officers for a gold-prospecting picnic to the diggings at Coromandel. Listed in the Museum Book Store Catalogue (London) in 1915, 1923 and 1927, then purchased (already bound) by Dr Charles A. O. Fox, of Lynch Cottage, Llanmorlais, Gower, Wales. He mentioned them in a letter to the Library dated 14 March 1960 (TL3/1/1) and they were subsequently acquired by the Library after passing through the hands of dealers Newricks and Bethunes.

Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: The left half of the page shows a wooden dwelling house thatched with raupo with a fence, a gateway, and an unusually long ridgepole. Below it is the end of another house (a cooking house) made of wood with a tekoteko (carved figurehead) at the top of its ridgepole. Both buildings are at Tu Kaitohe or Kaitoke Pa, Te Wherowhero's pa at the foot of Taupiri Mountain, Waikato The right side of the page shows at the top, two figures seated opposite one another and crying (the tangi or crying match). Below they are 'pressing noses' (hongi) and at the bottom of the page, they are hugging. Beside them is a sketch of a pole, three feet long, with white feathers 'wound into scarlet things'. Description: Gold dredges, gold sluicing, and machinery associated with gold mining in the South Island. Includes a few photographs taken in Australia, particularly the Pioneer Tin Mine in Tasmania. Inserted in a pocket in the front of the album are 19 loose prints, chiefly showing various claims in the North Island, some of which are taken by H J Locke. Also named in these images are the Saxon Mine and Ivanhoe Mine. Pinafore Claim was located at Waiotahi, Thames. Cambria Claim was a gold mine located in Thames. Gold King Dredge was on the Clutha River near Roxburgh circa 1899. Title supplied by Library. Date range estimated partly on dates that dredges were known to be operating.
