Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Photographs taken in New Zealand, except several of yachts in the Solent, England which were taken by West & Son (Gosport, England). Most of the New Zealand scenes were photographed by Arthur Thomas Bothamley. A number of images show Pukearuhe and the Pukearuhe Redoubt, and include two views of a large wooden and thatched roofed house near the Redoubt. It was single-storeyed, with a bay window, and was probably the house occupied by Marion Ellis Rowan and her husband (1873-1877) while the 43rd Regiment was stationed at Pukearuhe, near the Redoubt. Several views of the Marlborough Sounds show a group, including Gerald Fitzgerald (son of James Edward Fitzgerald), alongside several Rob Roy canoes, and one with a canoe named `Geroit Mare'. Description: Photographs of the New Plymouth district, including coastal scenes, Mount Egmont, the New Plymouth wharves. Views of Parihaka include group portraits of Maori, and several of Pakeha people amongst the Maori. One shows a large party of Europeans (men and women) about which a slip is inserted into an envelope at the beginning of the album. The note lists a number of them, and states "This party of Europeans at Parihaka may have been when Major Parris was invited to visit Te Whiti one New Year - & to bring a party of friends" (signed R Allan). Names include F. Cornwall, H. Stoeker, [?] Ward, Miss Cornwall, Mrs D.K. Morrison, W.C. Weston, Mrs Sladden, Miss McKellar, Mrs Robertson, Mrs L.D. Webster, and Miss A. Hursthouse. The slip also notes "11 of the Europeans appear to have white feathers in their hats". An envelope inserted in the album identifies two young women with bicycles as Flo Avery (later Mrs Sydney Cottier), and Adele Avery (later Mrs Lou Webster), two of John Avery's daughters, who had the first bicycles in New Plymouth Quantity: 1 album(s). Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s to 1871. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in this album at p. 51) The Thames goldfields are shown in a number of images, including some with captions Shortland and Grahamstown (now part of Thames); the Moanataira [i.e. Moanatairi] wire tramway, with the Rainbow Hotel nearby; Hunt's claim (known as the Shotover Mine); the Missouri Battery; the Bank of New Zealand building at Grahamstown; and miners' huts. The timber industry is shown with kauri logs being transported by bullock teams and awaiting transport by water. Photographs associated with Maori include military outposts at Terewera (i.e. Tarawera) and Ormond; "Kawiti's Runanga, or court houses, now `tapu', Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 21); "limestone caves at Waiomeo [sic], Bay of Islands; the burial place of the Mangakahia tribe. Strictly tapu" (p. 22); "Group at Waimeo feast, Bay of Islands" (p. 20); "Native feast - or bone-scraping at the burial of the remains of several chiefs at Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 46); "Waipawa Valley, Poverty Bay, scene of the massacre by Te Kooti" (p. 47); "Here the moa feet impressions were found, Poverty Bay, Sept. 1871, D.L.M." (p. 51). There are two-image panoramas of the Thames goldfields and Napier. In this album they are not on following pages, but are separated.
