Description: Photographs of and relating to the Wilson family ex Eketahuna. William M Wilson was born in Glasgow in 1868, coming to New Zealand when 8 years of age. He was apprenticed to John Fitchett, coach builder in Wellington, then with other firms including Rouse & Hurrell. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. Description: Photographs of military activities and war work in New Zealand during World 2, 1939-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official use. This album contains photographs on pages 1-54 (Pages 55-149 are empty). Activities include training in building of fascines and revetments for protecting trench walls; barbed wire "concertina"; excavation of command posts (part of a defensive trench system); the use of a 2" mortar; anti-tank rifle instruction; instruction in identifying enemy weapons including grenades and land mines and use of an electric mine detector. The cookery wing in action in the open air; artillery school of instruction; signallers establishing communication & erecting a telegraph pole; use of a 25-pounder; bayonet practice; medical training including rescue of wounded, use of an improvised stretcher, improvised raft for a river crossing carrying the stretcher, transfer to an ambulance, and finally a view of an actual open-air operation. The arrival of Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt, shown with New Zealand dignitaries (p 18). Men and women who have returned on furlough parading through Wellington on their way to a luncheon given in their honour by the RSA (p 19-21, 38-40); the arrival of repatriated Prisoners of War being greeted by friends and family in Wellington (p 33-36) A huge crowd celebrating the victory over the Italians at Liberty Corner, on the intersection of Hunter Street, Featherston Street and Lambton Quay (Friday 3rd September 1943) Ceremonies at an undentified marae including Maori dance, haka, poi dances and speeches by military officers. Pages 28-30 show the visit of a British Military Mission to the Forest & Jungle Warfare Wing of the Army School of Instruction, with demonstrations of jungle training. Women are shown with views of the Women's Land Service (Land Army), and also as Post & Telegraph drivers collecting huge bags of mail from a ship. Infantry students at the Army School, Trentham are shown in a river crossing exercise near Foxton, building rafts big enough to carry people, vehicles and weaponry. Launching a fuel barge built at the Wellington Patent Company's shipyards at Evans Bay, where the ceremony was performed by Managing Director Mr Jamieson. Pages 49-53 show photographs of Polish refugee children arriving and settling into the refugee camp at Pahiatua. Pages 53 and 54 show the official opening of a new Model Kindergarten in Hospital Road, Newtown (Saturday 18th November, 1943), opened by the Prime Minister Peter Fraser. Also present were the Labour MP for Wellington South, Robert Mckeen and his wife Jessie Mckeen, Mrs J A Doctor (President of the Free Kindergarten Association), and Dr Clarence Beeby (Director of Education). Description: Adkin album. Wellington (2), nos. 241-441. Views of Wellington taken between 1950 and 1957. Includes harbour swim event at Evans Bay, 26 February 1950; speedboat contests at Evans Bay, 4 March 1950; Patent slip and the Union Steam Ship Co's wharf at Evans Bay; tulip Sunday at the Wellington Botanic Garden (15 October 1950); Evans Bay Yacht Club yard in use as a temporary base for Solent flying boats with the Ararangi at a mooring; various views of reclamation undertaken by TEAL for their flying boat service at Evans Bay, and flying boats. Many of the images in this album are linked with Evans Bay, as Adkin was living at 424 Evans Bay Parade in the 1950s, several images showing the house. Views of Wellington from the Mount Victoria lookout and from the Tinakori Ridge Radio Station, in 1952; the old Robert Hannah residence in Boulcott Street; views of the inner city including the upper end of Ghuznee St., Upper Willis St., the Children's Dental Clinic. Image no. 313 shows a house at 214 Upper Willis Street (known as Restwyn), taken in Feb 1953, while image no. 434 shows the same site in January 1957 after the house had been demolished. Numbers of images show preparations and decorations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. There are many photographs of preparation for extending the airport at Rongotai, showing Moa Point Hill in course of destruction to provide spoil for reclamation, and also Rongotai Ridge, with one view of a house being moved from the ridge, also showing development of the breakwater at Moa Point, all taken betwen 1953 and 1957. A 1954 image shows an extension to the Town Hall under construction for municipal offices in December 1953; the Hinemoa at No. 1 Ferry Wharf; preparations and decorations for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in December 1953, including decorations at the Railway Station, Defence Stores Building in Featherston St., Kirkcaldie & Stains, James Smiths Corner, DIC, and the GPO. Image taken in March 1956 shows a house with turret on the corner of Upper Willis St and Aro St (a house which was shown in CD Barraud's painting of 1877). Views of yachting in the harbour, Ward Island, and the Eastbourne seawall. Outcast yacht is pictured.

Description: Photographs taken in New Zealand, except several of yachts in the Solent, England which were taken by West & Son (Gosport, England). Most of the New Zealand scenes were photographed by Arthur Thomas Bothamley. A number of images show Pukearuhe and the Pukearuhe Redoubt, and include two views of a large wooden and thatched roofed house near the Redoubt. It was single-storeyed, with a bay window, and was probably the house occupied by Marion Ellis Rowan and her husband (1873-1877) while the 43rd Regiment was stationed at Pukearuhe, near the Redoubt. Several views of the Marlborough Sounds show a group, including Gerald Fitzgerald (son of James Edward Fitzgerald), alongside several Rob Roy canoes, and one with a canoe named `Geroit Mare'.
