Description: Hanrahan qualified as a registered nurse in 1940 and joined the New Zealand Army Nursing Service in July 1943. She sailed the same month from Wellington as a nurse aboard the Dutch hospital ship `Oranje'. During 1943 and early 1944 the `Oranje' made several trips between Port Said and South Africa and Australia and New Zealand. In the later part of 1944 the `Oranje' travelled mainly between the United Kingdom and Italy carrying wounded military personnel. Hanrahan left the ship in Cairo in Dec 1944 and served in the Cairo Number One General Hospital for the remainder of her war service. Description: The letters were edited by the author to delete references to family matters. What remains is a detailed description of the conduct of the War as seen from Rogers' perspective. His duties involved managing traffic to and from the front and collecting intelligence. This kept him in close contact with the New Zealand Army during the various campaigns it was involved in in France. Rogers pays particular attention to his dealings with both Corps and regimental officers and men. Relationship complexity - Further photographs by Stanley are in the photographic collection of James Henderson, Photographs, chiefly relating to Stanley Dick Rogers, a Captain in New Zealand Mounted Rifles during World I, PACOLL-8637 Rogers worked at the Railway Workshops in Petone. He joined the Volunteers in 1902 and was frequently seconded to the Defence Department. In Aug 1914 he was appointed Assistant Commandant on Somes Island. In February 1916 he left New Zealand aboard the `Rangiotu' with the 3rd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade for Egypt and subsequently landed in France in May 1916. In August 1916 he was seconded as a field officer, II ANZAC Army Corp (later Headquarters XXII Corps) and appointed Road and Traffic supervisor. Description: Photograph album compiled by David S Laing. Comprises views of Hawke's Bay, particularly Lake Waikaremoana. The first part of the album contains published plan and photographs of the Suez Canal. It includes scenes of shipping at Port Said and on the canal, the pyramids, the Great Sphinx, an oasis, with life at the various localities. There is one photograph of Edinburgh, looking across at the old town from Princes Street, with a line of horses and carriages in the foreground. The latter part of the album contains scenes in New Zealand, many showing Lake Waikaremoana with various locations, including Te Kauanga-o-Manaia (Straits of Manaia), and Te Ana-o-Tikitiki cave. The other main area shown is Napier, the city, the wharves, and two churches. A large group of photographs are groups of people; family groups; groups with tennis rackets; groups with bowls; and a few scenes show a man in military uniform. Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: Four photograph albums compiled by Robert Henry (Harry) Fulton relating to his World War I service between 1916-1919 with New Zealand 12th Reinforcements, and with the New Zealand Army Service Corps (NZASC) based at New Zealand Base Kit Stores unit at Sling Camp, Bulford, England. Many photographs taken by Fulton. Some prints are taken by other unknown photographers as indicated by caption 'loaned negatives', and as they show campaigns, such as Gallipoli, in which Fulton did not serve. Images show his time with the 12th Reinforcements; from the journey from New Zealand on HMNZT 'Ulimaroa' and 'Ivernia' troop ships to Egypt in 1916, camp life in England as part of the NZASC, and activities whilst on leave during wartime and post war. Particularly shows family and home in Ireland and sight-seeing photographs from around Egypt and Great Britian, including New Zealand soldiers at Stonehenge. Prints have captions on the album pages; some images are inscribed on the print. Fulton has often arranged images of unrelated locations and activities on individual album pages. Description: Family photographs and views of Fiji, Canada and the Middle East during World War 1939-1945. The photographs of Canada are negatives, and all relate to the RAF Commonwealth air training programme. There are views of Halifax and the ANZAC Club there. Others are of Montreal and New York. There are photographs of soldiers, planes and countryside taken from the air. Then it's off to Britain, views of London, English countryside and active service. One sequence of negatives records a trip to the Middle East. The Fijian photographs are prints taken by a member of the 30th Battalion, that part of the New Zealand army in Fiji sent directly to Lautoka on the west coast of Viti Levu, and stationed at the Namaka Camp, about 17 miles inland from Lautoka. There are views of Namaka Camp, of camp life, of recreations, work, manoeuvres, and the effects of the hurricane that hit Fiji on the 20th Feb, 1941. There are also views of a camp at a place called Comboni (pronounced "thomboni") which is a coastal tourist spot and beach on the western end of the northern coast of Viti Levu towards the Ba River mouth. There is one photograph of a military camp made up of tents at Momi Bay on the west coast of Viti Levu, south of Lautoka. There are views of Suva and an ANZAC Day parade there as well as images of Fijians, villages, Fijian buildings and the country side in general. After his tour of duty in Fiji the creator of this collection was sent to the Middle East. The family photographs date from the 1930s. The largest group of these are records of the New Zealand contingent at the Australian Boy Scout Jamboree held at Frankston, Melbourne, from 27 December 1934 to 13 January 1935. The New Zealand contingent constructed a "Maori Pa" and dressed up in Maori costume. There are 18 prints of this feature of the New Zealand contribution to the jamboree. Arrangement: Negatives at 35 mm 22145 to 22228, and 1/4-81170-F to 1/4-81202-F This collection comes from two different sources. The negatives of Canada are associated with the name of Sergeant E H Capewell (also apparently known as \"Stormy Capewell\"). Those of the New Zealand army in Fiji and the rest of the photographic prints in the collection belonged to Private K A Hendry who came from Dannevirk before the war, and left Trentham camp for Fiji as a member of a field ambulance team. There is also an envelope dated 1943 addressed to him at the General NZ Hospital, 2nd N Z E F, Middle East Forces. During the Second World War New Zealand was responsable for raising forces and organising the defense of Fiji against possible Japanese attack. Brigadier W H Cunningham was put in command and the 8 Infantry Brigade Group was organsed for the operation. The defense strategy centred on the island of Viti Levu. Of the two areas designated as critical one centred on Suva and it's hinterland, and the other in the west centred on Lautoka. In late 1940 the 8 Infantry Brigade Group was transported to Fiji on the Rangitira escorted by the Monowai. It took three trips to effect this and the first troops landed in Fiji on 1 November 1940. The 30th Battalion was that section of the 8 Infantry Brigade Group sent directly to Lautoka on the West coast of Viti Levu. It's main base was Namaka camp inland From Lautoka and linked to the coast by the Colonial Sugar Company's railway. Another camp at Momi Bay, south of Lautoka guarded the Navula passage through the reef off Momi. There was also a temporary camp at a resort beach called Comboni, north of Lautoka. The rest of the 8 Infantry Brigade Group went to Suva which was also the location of the command headquarters. During the organisation of the 8 Infantry Brigade Group troops were assembled at the military camps at Ngaruawahia, Te Rapa, and Trentham. Those at Trentham were support services -- the 7 Field Ambulance, and details such as Pay, Records, Ordnance, Provost and Signals. Private K A Hendry was part of the Trentham operations and evidence suggests that he was a member of the 7 Field Ambulance. The Australian Boy Scout Jamboree held at Frankston, Melbourne, was the first international scouting event held outside the United Kingdom. Over 12,000 scouts from 23 countries attended, and it was the only scouting event held in Australia attended by Lord Robert Baden-Powell (who with his wife, features in two of the prints relating to this event). Description: The collection includes two different sets of photographs. The first is the photographs from the collection of Thomas Vernon Mitchell taken while he was serving in the army in the Middle East in the Second World War. They include tourist scenes of the ancient olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane; the city of the dead in Cairo; street scenes in Jerusalem, Tiberias and Aleppo; tombs of the caliphs in Cairo; the Dead Sea; the tower of King David, Jerusalem; the Hotel Yarkon, Tel Aviv; the citadel entrance, Aleppo; and Tiberias Hot Springs. Other images are a 24th Battalion chuch parade in February 1941, two views of Mitchell's grave, the effects of a sandstorm on a military camp in the desert, Mitchell and his friends on rickshaws, Papakura infantry at Trentham in October 1940, and the 24th Battalion party at Cairo 1941. Description: Album of photographs compiled by George Gordon Denniston illustrating a soldier's experience of of the Gallipoli campaign, April to September 1915. Photographer(s) unidentified. Album covers the period when Denniston left New Zealand in April 1915 for Egypt, and his time in a military camp there on the outskirts of Alexandria, from where, it seems, he left for Gallipoli. At the begining there are two photographs of the Samoan Expeditionary Force returning to New Zealand. The rest show soldiers preparing to leave and scenes on board ship which include stabled horses being fed en route, and dead ones being dropped overboard. Shipboard life and activities are well documented. There are many photos of fellow soldiers and some of the Asian crewmen. Ships and islands seen while passing through the Red Sea are depicted. Also some views of streets and people in Suez. Finally Alexandria and camp life. Over half the album is taken up with life and events at the military camp at Sidi Bishr which seems to have been situated near one of the suburban outskirts of Alexandria. This experience has been recorded in some detail, and includes social visits from women, views of French cavalry exercises, care and maintenance of the horses, native funerals and camp life in general.
