Description: A panoramic view of New Plymouth viewed from the sea, with Gannet and Albatross Islands on the right, the Wai Tera (Waitara) 'originally fixed on for the New Plymouth Settlement", the 'present site of New Plymouth' (before any houses were built) - all on the left side of the panorama. On the right are Mount Egmont, 'Barrett's [Accommodation] Houses and Hotel', 'Native Pah' and the Sugar Loaf Islands 'The islands on which Barrett defeated 5000 natives' In 'Information relating to New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841). p. 9-10, under 'Climate and soil' 'Mr G. Duppa states:- 'Amongst other sketches, I have sent you a panoramic view of the Sugar Loaves, Mount Egmont, and the Taranaki district generally, which I made when I went down there in the Brougham, with the Plymouth Company's surveyors. It will give you a better idea of the country than any verbal description I could give, beyond a few observations. The land for about three miles inland is slightly undulating, but not so steep but that a plough would go over the whole of it ... It is for the most part covered with fern and brushwood (which fire levels with the ground) for several miles inland, when you first meet with groves of timber, present a most park-like aspect ...' Description: Shows views in the Wellington area. The top view looks along Petone beach to the south-east, with Petone Pa and the 'Native Chapel' (the large building on the left). The central view, taken from Tinakori Road's junction with Hawkestone Street, looks towards Kelburn. There is a bullock cart in the foreground, and three Maori carrying large bundles. The nearest house, on the lower slopes of Tinakore Hill, is that of Nathaniel Levin, with the house of Mr Holroyd above it, and Mr Dorset's house further in the distance at the foot of the trees that cover the hill. The lowest view at Ohiro Bay (or valley) shows a flock of sheep attended by a shepherd and a large-single storied house nestled against trees, the home of Judge Halswell. Description: Photographs taken by Russell Duncan, dated 1893, 1903, 1910, 1914 and 1920. Images show places of historical interest in the Bay of Islands, Dusky Sound, and the Bay of Plenty. Included are views of John Fox's house at Paihia; William Busby's house at Waitangi; the Kemp House; the Stone Store at Kerikeri; the site of Governor Hobson's house at Okiato; Bishop Pompallier's house at Russell; the site of the Roberton House on Motuarohia Island, where Mrs Roberton (wife of Captain Richard Roberton), her two children, a Māori-Pākehā boy, and a man-servant were killed on 20 November 1841, and their house burnt; and the last post standing at Te Heu Heu's Pa (Waitahanui Pa) at Taupo. Several views follow of areas in Dusky Sound, and one of Sulphur Bay on Whale Island, Bay of Plenty. Description: Watercolour shows the south Wairarapa coast, possibly near Te Kopi looking west from near Cape Palliser, with dwellings and probably a whaling station (Wades Whaling Station? as mentioned in the Wellington Spectator of 1844) in the centre. Several men stand on the steep hillside at the right. The foreground terrain is covered with low scrub. Pencil sketch is a preliminary sketch for PLate 12 in "Illustrations to adventure in New Zealand" (1845), showing two food drying platforms in the right foreground, the curve of Porirua Harbour, and the entrance to Paremata Harbour in the right distance. Description: At the top of the page, a view looking down on the Maori defensive earthworks (trenches) at Rangiriri Pa, Waikato. At the bottom of the page, oriented upside-down are, on the left, a plan view of a pa at Golden Bay (Massacre Bay) visited by Heaphy in the mid-late 1840s. On the right is a cross-section view of the stockade around the pa. The text below 'Section of walls near a gateway' [Massacre Bay] reads in part: The stockade was double, an inner line of pallisades standing a foot or 15 inches from the outer wall, which was formed by large posts being planted deep in the ground every 8 feet. Horizontal pieces were lashed to these, the first about three feet from the ground, the second at say seven feet, and the third at ten feet ... Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). The central view shows a Maori man looking through a rock archway, with timber bracing at the top, the sea beyond. The view is close to Pukerua Bay.
