Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: Arthur Wilson was born in Auckland in 1868. Describes how his father, a builder by trade, went to Rotorua in 1872. Recalls being educated in an old whare on the side of Pukeroa Hill overlooking Ohinemutu. Talks about some of his fellow pupils. Mentions the Morrisons who ran the Rotorua Hotel and Dr Hope Lewis who owned the first home in Rotorua. Describes the stores at Ohinemutu which belonged to Thomas Wrigley, Harry Taylor, William Kelly and Charley and Willie Rogers. Describes how the Post Office and police station were built on the government reserve. Describes some schooling at Te Wairoa with Mr Haszard and at Tauranga District High School in 1883. Talks about his brothers and sisters Mary Jane, Kate, Eliza, William, Millie and Ellen Hinemoa. Mentions that William lived only a week and Ellen Hinemoa died at the age of two from falling into a hogshead of boiling water. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: The collection includes two different sets of photographs. The first is the photographs from the collection of Thomas Vernon Mitchell taken while he was serving in the army in the Middle East in the Second World War. They include tourist scenes of the ancient olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane; the city of the dead in Cairo; street scenes in Jerusalem, Tiberias and Aleppo; tombs of the caliphs in Cairo; the Dead Sea; the tower of King David, Jerusalem; the Hotel Yarkon, Tel Aviv; the citadel entrance, Aleppo; and Tiberias Hot Springs. Other images are a 24th Battalion chuch parade in February 1941, two views of Mitchell's grave, the effects of a sandstorm on a military camp in the desert, Mitchell and his friends on rickshaws, Papakura infantry at Trentham in October 1940, and the 24th Battalion party at Cairo 1941. Views of New Zealand (tourist scenes of the South Island include the West Coast, Queenstown-Lakes District; and of the North Island include thermal areas around Lake Rotomahana, Ohinemutu, and Wairakei). These are interspersed with scenes in the West Indies, India, and Australia. Names of places shown in the album are listed above. Pages 29-30 show images of "SS Tarawera" in Wet Jacket Arm. Pages 30-32 show views of one or possibly two ships. The names in pencilled captions are not clear. The ship on page 30 appears to have the name RMSS Rune [or Rane, or Rome], but on page 32 that name is crossed out and appears to be RMSS Shamun? However the name on page 31 appears more like RMSS Shannon, and photographs of the Shannon appear very like the full image in this album on page 30, in which the ship is sailing through "the canal". Description: According to the inscription inside the front cover (by an unidentified person), the date is firmly established as 1884, however the album has a number of photographs of the Tarawera area, both before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. These include views of the White Terraces, one of which has a group of Maori cooking food in the hot pools; a carved house at Te Wairoa, showing interior and exterior before the eruption, and the exterior afterwards; a group of Maori at Te Ariki (one of the places most devastated in the eruption with the loss of many lives. This image has the inscription `Natives of te Ariki first to be killed by eruption'); views of Mount Tarawera covered in mud and ash; and the Old Mill, destroyed in the eruption. Many of the images have the signature initials J.M. (Josiah Martin), and a few have the initials F.A.C (Frank Arnold Coxhead) who may have taken them, but which may just have been printed by him. The last few views are in Tasmania, including Burnie - Emu Bay, and the Guide Falls, near Burnie. Inscriptions: Album page - `Ex libris Brent Gration-Maxfield. 1967'; Album page - `New Zealand. 1884. Most of the photographs are by George John Roberts (1848-1910). Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, relating to his family, his work and his interests. Family photographs include portraits of his wife (Laura) and two children (William and Phyllis), and scenes of their home in Whiteman's Valley Road, Silverstream; views of the Hutt Valley including large numbers of cars travelling to Trentham Racecourse, and the Hutt River. Another group of images relate to a holiday at the Mendip Hills Homestead in Canterbury, with scenes of farm life, including haymaking, merino sheep, and farm buildings. During their stay in the South Island Godber also took photographs of Dunedin (including the Ross Reservoir, Otago Boys' High School, Seacliff Mental Hospital, the 1926 Dunedin Exhibition, and the Hillside Railway Workshops); Invercargill (including the Invercargill Railway Workshops); Stewart Island, Moeraki, Tuatapere, Waiau River, Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Various railway stations in Canterbury and Otago, the Burnside Iron Mills, and the Rosslyn Mills. Godber was a volunteer fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade with the album including views of the building, groups of firemen, fire engines and other fire fighting equipment, and a building in Petone damaged by fire. In his work with New Zealand Railways, mainly at the Petone Railway Workshops, he took interior photographs of various buildings, including the Machine Shop and finishing benches, the engine room, lathes, boilers, and fitting shops. He also took photographs of many of the steam engines that were built and worked on at the workshops. One scene shows a group of men watching a fight. Many images show his interest in logging railways, particularly in the Piha, Karekare, Anawhata area. Scenes of logging camps, various methods of transporting logs including bullock teams, logging trains, and dams created and then tripped to send logs down by river, and timber mills. Other topics covered in Godber's photographs are scenes at Maori marae and meeting houses, with some of the people identified; Maori carving and rafter designs; beekeeping, and gold mining.
