Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Album chiefly shows members of a Lands & Survey team surveying boundaries etc, in the Chatham Islands, and in South Canterbury, circa 1938. Residents of the Chatham Islands, various locations in the islands and activities such as sheep transportation from the islands to Lyttelton and Wellington by ship are shown. Another sequence shows drainage and irrigation procedures in South Canterbury. The photographer is probably Russell Gladstone Dick, later the New Zealand Surveyor-General. Other - Source of descriptive information - Card inserted in album which reads "Ample evidence this is a 1938 Lands and Surveys team surveying boundaries etc ... Description: Album of South Island scenes (except for a few taken en route to Wellington showing The Brothers, Pencarrow Head, and one of a group having a picnic at Muritai). Probably mostly photographed by George William Barltrop. The first section shows the Nelson and Marlborough areas, and several photographs of ships at sea, one shipwreck (the Antiocco Accame in 1901), and one aground (the Elginshire, 1902). People who are identified are: the Reverend Bennett (Frederick Augustus Bennett (later Bishop), with his first wife Hana Te Unuhi Mere Bennett, and young daughter, Rawinia Bennett (circa 1900); Abe Wells, photographed as an older man outside his cob house at Richmond (circa 1890s); and Isla Reid, photographed as a young girl, probably in the Dunedin area. Three scenes in cemeteries have clearly identified headstones, and include those for the Reverend Samuel Poole, Frank Churchill Simmons; and a group memorial for Charlotte McDonald, Annie McQuaid and Lizzie Crinrod, stewardesses who were drowned in the wreck of the SS Wairarapa, Great Barrier Island, 29th October 1894. Description: Comprises 11 letters from Charles H Turner and Frank C Turner to their mother in England while they were sailing to New Zealand, travelling round New Zealand followed by a visit to Australia. Three of the letters are from Charles and eight are from Frank. They were written on board ship, the `Kent' and the `Tarama', and while they were travelling in New Zealand and Australia. Both sons describe life on board ship, the people they were travelling with, ports visited, activities on board ship and describe in some detail the various places they visited in New Zealand (Papakura, where their brother had a farm, Waikato, Lyttelton, Wellington, Bluff, Dunedin, Nelson, Auckland and Taranaki) and Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart Town). Talks about her family background and schooling, and working in a market garden for a year before studying horticulture at Lincoln College. Refers to studying at Christchurch Teachers College for a period but leaving and working until she was old enough to get a job as a quarantine officer in 1981. Talks about working in Christchurch and Lyttelton as an Agricultural Quarantine Officer, the uniform, training and exams, the work bag and the manual. Recalls on-the-job training with experienced officers and being rostered to different work sites. Talks about the fumigation training she received and the process of fumigation. Discusses working at the mail centre, fumigation or heat treament of some items, and procedures for handling prohibited goods. Compares work at the airport and when inspecting vessels at the port, and comments on why Lyttelton became a permanently staffed site later. Talks about the procedure for inspecting ships when they arrived in port including sealing meat lockers, checking crew quarters and inspecting pets. Refers to egg smuggling and to animals that are not allowed into New Zealand. Mentions attitudes towards women quarantine inspectors on the wharves. Comments on the inspection of containers at the port. Explains how fresh produce is inspected at the airport and how seeds arrive in Christchurch. Talks about the United States Operation Deep Freeze aircraft. Recalls spraying aircraft for pests and the current system used for aircraft 'disinsection'. Mentions disposal of garbage and food from aircraft. Discusses processing passengers in the terminal, risk assessment profiling, and the effectiveness of x-ray machines and beagle detector dogs. Refers to improvements in the way the Quarantine Service interacts with people, provides information and how forms are worded. Talks about the introduction of infringement notices and instant fines. Comments on increasing public awareness from the television programme Border Patrol and from staff doing public talks. Mentions how passengers are checked when they leave cruise ships. Reflects that the high membership of Quarantine Service staff in the PSA is related to the shift and weekend work, and refers to working to change the shift system when she was a PSA delegate. Comments on why she changed to working part-time for a period, and later returning as a full-time trainer. Mentions that a degree qualification has become a prerequisite for quarantine officers.
