Description: Folder one consists of letters, some incomplete, written by Hamilton to his parents during the period 11 April 1844 to 25 Dec 1845. These letters describe Hamilton's experiences as private secretary to Governor FitzRoy, including comments on the fighting in the Bay of Islands, his opinions on the state of New Zealand and news of FitzRoy being recalled in late 1845. Folder two contains; a letter from Charles Clifford dated 25 Aug 1845 to Col Richmond answering questions about the treatment of flax and possible production of flax products, specifically canvas for wool bales; several letters from FitzRoy, one incomplete and undated, to Hamilton, dated 29 July 1846, 12 and 13 Sept 1847 giving news of FitzRoy's activities and comments on Hamilton's career including advice on an opening on the survey vessel the `Acheron' and a letter from Henry John Tancred to Hamilton dated 25 Sept 1871 dealing with local and national politics and economic matters and passing on news of University developments. Description: O'Halloran arrived in Australia in 1860 from Ireland and held a variety of jobs in Melbourne and Victoria before coming to New Zealand in 1861. He worked at gold mining in Otago, hotel and store-keeping, driving and contracting in the Thames, Auckland, and central North Island. He spent nine years with the Mounted Militia, 1865-1874, in Taranaki, central North Island and East Coast and saw frequent action. O'Halloran returned in Australia in 1884. Description: The diary records family affairs, buying and leasing of land, building the house, establishing the farm, day by day work, growing and harvesting of crops, stock raising, prices received for farm products and payment made for supplies. Brief noting of historical events such as the killing of settlers by Maori, attendance at militia parades. A son prospected for gold in the Kaitaki range. Inserted on loose sheet is a list of `Forts, blockhouses... occupied by the troops and militia 1863 and 1864'. Also included are a copy of the marriage certificate of William Harrison and Harriet Wells (1837) and photocopies of the end-papers of family books giving genealogical information; newspaper cutting concerning Mr P J McComish and Thomas Valentine's diary; obituary for Mrs R A Northwood (daughter of Thomas Harrison). Description: Notebooks, correspondence, and papers relating to the history, geology and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on Maori canoes, art and history, the moa, education, hydro-electricity, the Shakespearean controversy, his political beliefs, and other subjects. There are also land deeds and papers of W Howard Hill and William Colenso. Notebooks, correspondence, and papers on the history, geology, and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on moa, Captain St George's diary, Shakespearean controversy, and other topics. Papers include notes and papers on geology, history of the Kaingaroa-Taupo area, Te Kooti campaign, and early history of New Zealand; correspondence from W Colenso to Mrs E Hill. Also journal for 1897 which deals largely with school inspecting in Hawke's Bay. Henry Thomas Hill was the Inspector for Schools for Hawke's Bay and the East Coast. He joined the Hawke's Bay Philosophical Institute in 1884 and became President in 1891 and managed the Colenso Bequest for the Institute. Quantity: 159 folder(s). 1.16 Linear Metres. Description: Comprises journal kept by Stuart from 1863-1866 while he was travelling on the continent through Paris, Nice and Geneva, then his embarkation on the `Sea King' at Gravesend (Nov 1863) and coaling at St Vincent. He describes the entertainments on board, the weather, storms, death of a child born on board, arrival at Auckland (27 Jan 1864), meeting the 4th Company which had come from India, his journey to Otahuka and his first impressions. He writes of escorting carts and other military duties, painting views, problems of paying the men, Maori prisoners, in camp at Koheroa, of the engineers making a road, cutting firewood, seeing Tauranga, Te Puke, Wheranghi, fighting, arrival at Wairoa, orders received from Major Shuttleworth, visiting Te Papa, social activities in Auckland, Christmas (1864) and ends at Te Papa on 10 Jan 1865. Description: Collection comprises the private journal of Andrew Thomas H Carbery, dated 1863 to 1865; two commissions appointing Carbey as assistant surgeon to the British army and to the 14th Regiment of Foot in 1858, and a leave of absence dated 1865 which gives Carbery leave of absence from the army starting from 29 June1866 to his retirement from service. The journal outlines Carbery's activities during this period 1863 to 1865 and comments on the conduct of the war and the Hauhau movement. It also contains miscellaneous anecdotes, verse and sketches. Also includes a type transcript of the journal created by Andrea Shand in 1958. Source of information on Carbery's regiment was taken from MS-Papers-2310-2. Source of title - Title page Accompanying material - Transcript of the journal (folder 2) Carbery was Assistant Surgeon with the 2nd battalion of the 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot. He was based in New Zealand between 1859 and 1866. He saw active service in the Waikato, Auckland and Raglan areas with a detachment (flying column) of the 12th, 14th, 65th and 70th Regiments.
