Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by various photographers, circa early 1880s. Images include several Maori groups, Maori kainga, meeting houses, carving; a large number of views of mud pools, geysers, hot springs, and in particular views of the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Other views show areas of the South Island, including Dunedin City, Oamaru, Christchurch; and the North island including Auckland, Thames District (a number showing aspects of gold mining in the area). The last photograph, of the R.M.S.S. Zealandia was taken by Taber Photo, San Francisco. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Views around the Taupo Tongariro area, including Mounts Ngaruahoe and Tongariro, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, Lake Taupo and Wairakei. There is one image of the Maori interior of Tom Ryan's whare, one of the Terraces Hotel at Lake Taupo, and others of various buildings at the Spa Hotel (Taupo), including the interior of the dining room. This building was the meeting house Te Tiki o Tamamutu, purchased by John Joshua (proprietor of the Spa Hotel) for use as a smoking room and dining room for the hotel guests. Several images show unidentified Maori women in posed groups, or working with flax, and in one case a woman using a treadle sewing machine. An unidentified man is seen, in several images, fishing at pools below the Aratiatia Rapids. Photographs taken by Auckland Star photographers around the turn of the 19th-20th century. Description: Contains photograph album, loose prints, and negatives of images taken on the Chatham Islands between circa 1900 to 1930s, with most images taken in circa 1920s. Local photographer and farmer Owen Cecil Mitchell created the negatives, most likely compiled the album, and stamped the backs of many of the prints, in ink, with his name. A few prints are identified on the backs and some have corresponding negatives. Numerous negatives do not have corresponding prints and some later images may show scenes in Christchurch. - Photographs chiefly illustrate life on the Chatham Islands, including portraits of individuals and groups and community events and industry (mainly sheep farming). Landscapes, wildlife, flora, and buildings are also covered. - The collection contains images of men holding human bones, mainly in a beach setting. Description: Photographs of Maori men, women and children, some portraits and some showing various activities of daily life, taken by the New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Department. Most of the girls and women are unidentified, but some are named, including Maraea, Ani Merita, and Hara. All those fully identified are listed above. Maori lifestyle is shown with women beating flax and weaving flax; men carving wood; women cooking in hot pools and washing in hot pools; children bathing in hot pools; children diving for pennies from a bridge with tourists watching; women greeting each other with the hongi; men performing the haka, and women performing poi dances; and a waka on Lake Rotorua. Description: Album of photographs taken 1921 by James Ingram McDonald while on an ethnographic expedition up the Whanganui River. The expedition was undertaken by McDonald, Elsdon Best, Peter Buck, and Johannes Carl Andersen, under the auspices of the Dominion Museum. There are many views of the Whanganui River and villages, including numbers of waka at Koriniti, and views of eel traps across the river. Very detailed sequences of photographs show flax weaving, coarser weave for kete and eel traps, and finer quality for clothing and ceremonial mats. The captions appear to have been added later, in pencil, with some names being unclear. Many of the photographs have copy negatives, some are 1/4 and some 1/2. Description: Three coloured postcards, one of a old Maori woman dozing outside a house (identified as Ceylon Wickliffe's Great Aunt), a Maori girl described as the Arawa Belle (identified as Marie McFarland), and some Maori children playing in the lake at Ohinemutu; the seven men of the executive of the New Zealand Harbour Boards Conference seated outside a building; three photographs of a Maori event in a park, probably in Wellington, with tents pitched and participants wearing kakahu over European dress; two women in traditional dress next to a wood carving, one is holding a hoe; a hut at Hawk's Crag on the Buller River; a loaded cart passing through Porter's Pass; Wellington wharves seen from Oriental Parade; the Buller River; a group of men gathered round a table to sign a document; view from Mount Cook towards Mount Victoria with what are possibly brickworks in the foreground; and photographs of four petitions submitted in Greymouth. Provenance: Irene C Zachariah was the widow of Joseph Zachariah who operated the Zak studio in Wellington.
