Description: Photographs of and relating to the Wilson family ex Eketahuna. William M Wilson was born in Glasgow in 1868, coming to New Zealand when 8 years of age. He was apprenticed to John Fitchett, coach builder in Wellington, then with other firms including Rouse & Hurrell. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. Description: Album of images taken by various photographers, some of whom are identified, probably between 1870 and 1899. Views of New Zealand (tourist scenes of the South Island include the West Coast, Queenstown-Lakes District; and of the North Island include thermal areas around Lake Rotomahana, Ohinemutu, and Wairakei). These are interspersed with scenes in the West Indies, India, and Australia. Names of places shown in the album are listed above. Pages 29-30 show images of "SS Tarawera" in Wet Jacket Arm. Pages 30-32 show views of one or possibly two ships. The names in pencilled captions are not clear. The ship on page 30 appears to have the name RMSS Rune [or Rane, or Rome], but on page 32 that name is crossed out and appears to be RMSS Shamun? However the name on page 31 appears more like RMSS Shannon, and photographs of the Shannon appear very like the full image in this album on page 30, in which the ship is sailing through "the canal". Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'. Description: Album owned by Joseph Rhodes containing photographs and sketches and ephemera dated between 1860s-1880s of New Zealand and overseas. Includes photographs of Hawkes Bay dated between 1860s-1870s. Many of the sketches were drawn by Alfred Chapman, one section containing an illustrated tale "The life and adventures of Thomas Pinniger" (p 34a-d). On p 34b Governor Eyre is pictured lower left at Government House, Wellington. There are two photographs of paintings by Charles Barraud (one of Te Aro Flat, City of Wellington (p 68), and one of Wellington Heads (p 104). Many of the photographs of the Hawke's Bay area show the houses on various sheep stations, including Clive Grange Station, and Spring Hill Station (Joseph Rhodes), Maraekakaho Station (Donald Mclean), Woburn Station (Thomas Purvis Russell), Mount Herbert Station (Henry Robert Russell), and Mangatarata Station (Donald Gollan). There is also one of George Fannin's house in Napier, one of the Reverend Hamlin's mission station at Wairoa, and one of The Grange (Wellington home of Joseph Rhodes's brother William Barnard Rhodes).Others in the area are related to military encampments, barracks, stockades, and mission stations. On page 31 there is a photograph of "The great peace meeting, 1863", and one entitled "Whaka & tribe". On page 53, the caption reads "Donald McLean Esq. Superintendent, Hawkes Bay, purchasing Wairoa from the natives, 18[55?]." There are many photographs, postcards and tourist scenes taken in Egypt, Ireland, Norway, Italy and Australia. The Australian scenes show views in Queensland, including Australian Aborigines fishing for dugong, the Railway Mortuary Chapel at the Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney (subsequenlty sold to a church group, dismantled and rebuilt in North Ainslie in Canberra) and views in the Maryborough area. Description: Album of photographs taken by Thomas Andrew during a Pacific voyage on Henderson and Macfarlane schooner "Buster", leaving Auckland 19 September 1886, and calling at Niue, Manihiki, Suwarrow, Starbuck Island (where they rescued the crew of the Swedish barque Diana), Christmas Island, Swains Island (now part of American Samoa), Nauru, Tokelau, Gilbert, Ellice, Marshall and Caroline groups. They returned to Auckland in April 1887. Several photographs show ruined stone buildings at Ponape (Pohnpei), including one view of four men sitting in a boat at the entrance to a canal leading to the ruins The final photograph in the album is a group portrait of the Federal Convention 1891 Inscriptions: Album page - "From Mr S. Scenes of Parihaka, especially with relationship to the 1881 incident, include views of the pa (with Te Whiti's house visible); the Rahotu volunteer camp, the Rahotu Redoubt; Fort Rolleston; Sentry Hill; Pungarehu officers' quarters and redoubt; Nelson Camp; the Taranaki Rifles and Wellington Navals. Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s to 1871. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in this album at p. 51) The Thames goldfields are shown in a number of images, including some with captions Shortland and Grahamstown (now part of Thames); the Moanataira [i.e. Moanatairi] wire tramway, with the Rainbow Hotel nearby; Hunt's claim (known as the Shotover Mine); the Missouri Battery; the Bank of New Zealand building at Grahamstown; and miners' huts. The timber industry is shown with kauri logs being transported by bullock teams and awaiting transport by water. Photographs associated with Maori include military outposts at Terewera (i.e. Tarawera) and Ormond; "Kawiti's Runanga, or court houses, now `tapu', Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 21); "limestone caves at Waiomeo [sic], Bay of Islands; the burial place of the Mangakahia tribe. Strictly tapu" (p. 22); "Group at Waimeo feast, Bay of Islands" (p. 20); "Native feast - or bone-scraping at the burial of the remains of several chiefs at Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 46); "Waipawa Valley, Poverty Bay, scene of the massacre by Te Kooti" (p. 47); "Here the moa feet impressions were found, Poverty Bay, Sept. 1871, D.L.M." Description: Album compiled circa 1863-5, by Spencer P T Nicholl of the 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry. Some photographs taken by John Kinder. Photographs include images relating to military life, including the Oakura Redoubt, the Kaitake Redoubt, officers of the 68th regiment, military camps in Taranaki, and the Militia Hospital in New Plymouth. Pages 15-18 have the pencilled caption `Lake Taupo', but in fact are photographs of the volcanic area around Lake Rotomahana, and were taken by John Kinder in 1865. They include a sulphur volcano (whakataratara), the Whatapoho geyser, Otukapuarangi (Pink Terraces), and the Tarata or principal boiling springs. Pages 19-32 contain portraits of Maori men and women, some of which have pencilled captions. Inscriptions: Album page - `Spencer p.T. Nicholl (subsequently Lieut.
