McIntosh album 3

Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Includes photographs of Maori artefacts in museum context. Possibly created by James Edge-Partington, an anthropologist who studied artefacts in New Zealand and the Pacific. This volume is in the same style of album, with similar photographs and articles as Webster album 4 (PA1-o-519) which has Edge-Partington's named bookplate inside the front cover. Studies of a variety of artefacts including an instrument giving a decoy call for kiwi; a sea leopard's tooth carved and worn as a pendant (from Stewart Island); whale teeth pendants; weapons; tools; carved waka, prows of waka; carved meeting houses; Te Kooti's house "Te Waho"; carved storehouses; a Maori kite; eel traps and fish hooks. The artefacts are from various collections in New Zealand and overseas, including the Chapman Collection, the Hamilton Collection, the Hocken Collection and General Robley's Collection. Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working.
