Description: Photographs of life at the New Zealand General Hospital No 1 at Brockenhurst including patients being transferred by stretcher on to the hospital train and a soldier feeding chickens in the grounds. Also in the collection are a number of photographs of men in uniform (few captioned); a postcard of a woman with the message "To Ernie with fond love from Iris"; a man in a buggy harnessed to a horse for trotting races; a family group mostly of girls and young woman; and two faded prints of a soldier getting into a car on street with bunting on the house. Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front. Description: A pocket inside the front cover of this album contains 23 loose photographs of landscapes in New Zealand, many of them Government Publicity Photos. In the South Island various views show Milford and the Milford Track, Tasman Glacier, Mount Cook, and the Buller Gorge. In the North Island there are several views of a group of fallow deer near Featherston; two of geysers at Whakarewarewa; and two of caves in the Waitomo Cave system, showing the underground river in the Aranui Cave, and stalactites in the Ruakuri cave. The main body of the album contains older photographs, circa 1890s, of townscapes in the Wairarapa. Two scenes show groups of Maori performers, one of a posed group of men and women, some holding taiaha and mere; the other of a group of young girls dancing on a podium. Description: Correspondence and papers on Maori Land Court disputes (often in Maori); politics and politicians; ornithology; Maori genealogies and ethnology. Papers of the Blue Spur and Gabriel's Gully Consolidated Gold Mining Company 1866-1899. W Leo Buller's correspondence re the gift of Buller's Maori collection to the nation, 1911-1914. Family papers, land deed certificates, clippings. The Maori letters arise mainly from Buller's law practice and deal mainly with land court work. Some of the earlier letters are probably to his father, James Buller. A H Turnbull and Elsdon Best both appear to have worked on the letters. Best did not apparently find them useful to his research, but they will be useful to anyone interested in land matters in the Manawatu and Horowhenua areas. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Photographs of the New Plymouth district, including coastal scenes, Mount Egmont, the New Plymouth wharves. Views of Parihaka include group portraits of Maori, and several of Pakeha people amongst the Maori. One shows a large party of Europeans (men and women) about which a slip is inserted into an envelope at the beginning of the album. The note lists a number of them, and states "This party of Europeans at Parihaka may have been when Major Parris was invited to visit Te Whiti one New Year - & to bring a party of friends" (signed R Allan). Names include F. Cornwall, H. Stoeker, [?] Ward, Miss Cornwall, Mrs D.K. Morrison, W.C. Weston, Mrs Sladden, Miss McKellar, Mrs Robertson, Mrs L.D. Webster, and Miss A. Hursthouse. The slip also notes "11 of the Europeans appear to have white feathers in their hats". An envelope inserted in the album identifies two young women with bicycles as Flo Avery (later Mrs Sydney Cottier), and Adele Avery (later Mrs Lou Webster), two of John Avery's daughters, who had the first bicycles in New Plymouth Quantity: 1 album(s).
