Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986). Description: Interview with Janet Mary Braggins (nee Brockie), born Christchurch 1933, and Barbara Anderson Jarnell (nee Brockie), born Christchurch 1939. Talk about their father Walter Brockie, who worked at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens until they moved to Wellington in 1947 when he became curator at Otari. Describe their home and family life at Otari, and community life in Wadestown. Discuss their father's work maintaining and developing the gardens, referring to the rock garden, Cockayne's memorial grave, and planting kauri. Mention the two staff Arnold Henderson and Bon Everett, neighbour James K Baxter, and friend Harry Talbot. Discuss their father's interests (including photography and homebrewing), holiday plant collecting trips including Campbell Island, and breeding native plants. Mention their mother Vera Best started the visitors' book - James K Baxter wrote a poem in it. Refer to their father saying that it would probably be another 50 years before his work at Otari would be appreciated. Arnold was the son of Thomas Arnold of Rugby School. He came to New Zealand in 1848 on the `John Wickliffe'. He arrived in Wellington but soon moved to Nelson where he started a school, but was soon attracted to Tasmania. He later returned to England and gained some fame as a Catholic convert and scholar of English literature. Description: White describes life on board HMS `Mildura' while on a voyage to the Pacific Islands, including New Zealand, 24 Oct 1900 to 14 Jul 1902, and summarises from until Sep 1902. He recorded almost daily, noting his work schedule, stops made, places visited (mostly in New Zealand and Australia) and other events. Ports included Picton, and the Sounds, Auckland, Akaroa, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Norfolk Bay and Milford Sound and he describes reaction to the death of Queen Victoria in Jan 1901 and Naval Day celebrations in May 1901 at Neutral Bay, Sydney.
